A Royal Marine has been awarded one of Britain's highest military
honours for his part in a raid on a suspected al-Qaida stronghold in
Afghanistan.
Marine Liam Armstrong, 23, from Carlisle - who becomes Britain's most
junior ranking soldier to receive the Military Cross - has played down
the award, saying he didn't feel as if he'd done anything brave.
He seized nine armed men during the raid on a suspected stronghold and
weapons cache during Operation Jacana last year.
Without firing a shot, he and a colleague forced the gunmen to
surrender and hand over their weapons. They then kept the militia
fighters at bay until reinforcements arrived.
