BAGRAM, Afghanistan — The British Royal Marines began wrapping up
Operation Condor on Wednesday — their third try at killing or
capturing al-Qaida fighters in the rugged mountains of eastern
Afghanistan.
The green-beret-wearing marines are widely considered among the
world’s most hardy fighters. Their third mission ended like their
previous two — they were unable to locate the enemy, according to
marine spokesman Lt. Col. Ben Curry.
Officials trumpeted the operation as a success, saying the sweep has
denied al-Qaida sanctuary over the six days they were sweeping the
30-square-mile patch of rugged terrain. The marines also confiscated
two 82 mm mortars and 150 rounds of ammunition and discovered an empty
cave complex, which they destroyed.
