Seven young jarheads dead in the explosion of a 60mm mortar round
during a training exercise.

Here's what happened -- either:

1. In-bore detonation due to crack in base around filler plug. Mortar
rounds are hollow, filled with explosive from the bottom, then sealed
with a plug in the end. About one round in a million or so develops a
hairline crack around the seal, allowing the burning propellant to
leak into the round, causing the round to detonate in the tube, or,
just as it exits the tube, killing or injuring everyone around it.
One of my M102 105MM howitzers suffered exactly this type of in-bored
detonation at a FSB near Bu Dop SF Camp, December 1969. Only injury
was assistant gunner burned when hot recoil oil splashed on his face.

2. In-bore or premature detonation caused by bad fuze. They may have
been firing FUZE VT and someone ran the setting wrench to 0. Or,
someone may have dropped the round, cracking the fuze, causing it to
detonate the round in the bore or just as it left the tube.

3. Round was fuzed, ready to fire, crew member dropped the round,
causing it to detonate.

1 and 2 are probably, 3 is not likely.

Either way, best thing to do is honor the young jarheads, STFU, and
let the Marines handle it.

Of course, we all know the rightwing noise machine wouldn't give a
shit about this if the President were a white RepubliKlan.

There's another possibility although unlikely. When you drop the
round into the tube you are holding it with both hands. When you
release it you swing your hands down then away. I've seen people
accidentally hit the tube when they do that, even hitting the aiming
sights. Even knocking the tube out of position so it has to be re-
sighted. It's possible, but not likely that the tube got knocked
over.
