Oh well.... it was fun but the bandleader looked at me the second time and
saluted... and the third time, again with a hearty grin.
One other thing I noticed... no phoney decorations... the MOST any band member
had on were four medals and that was only on a couple of the Sr. Chiefs and the
Sr. Master Chief. I'm impressed that the Navy hasn't stooped to giving medals
for farting (ahemmm.. or perhaps NOT doing that!!!). Of course, the entire
band as I said were a least E-6's... and by their service hashmarks, many with
LESS than four year's service. However, that's okay because that's what it
takes to retain "world class" symphony level musicians and I'd say they're
worth every penny of it... not unlike the Army Band, etc, etc.

I don't know about the Navy Band... but I'd certainly THINK they'd at least do
Boot Camp.
Hmmm...quite different from the story I've been told. You see, my son has (or
rather, had) an interest in this. He's an all-state high school musician,
performing both vocally and two brass instruments.
He was contacted by a recruiter for THE Marine Band (versus A Marine band)
earlier this school year, and yes, all USMC Bandsmen do attend Boot Camp.
Afterwards, they attend some joint-service musician's school (I think the Navy
hosts it, but I can't find the information right now to verify that).
The USMC has four or five bands, located at their major installations. THE
Marine Band, though, "The President's Own," is more than a bit difficult to get
into. There was, when the recruiter talked to him, no member under the rank of
E-7, and something like 40% of them had Masters degrees in a music field. Most
had at least 10 years service before they were accepted into the unit.
Yes, rank comes quickly for them, but most come in at E-5 or E-6 because most
do have at least a 4-year degree. They are doing what they love (performing),
which they couldn't do if they used that degree to become officers.
Anyhow, members of the Marine Bands do, in fact, go through recruit training
just like anyone else....which is the reason why my son has (at least this
week) opted out. He's not into it, I guess, though I'm working on that. He's
been asking me a lot of questions about my military service lately, so
maybe....

"Recruit Training (Boot Camp)
Members of the U.S. Marine Band are the only members of the U.S. Armed
Services not required to undergo recruit training.
The mission of the U.S. Marine Band is "to provide music and perform such
other functions as are directed by the President of the United States and
the Commandant of the Marine Corps." Unlike other Marine Corps musical
units, the Marine Band has no assigned secondary combat role, and its
members are exempt from all such training. Marine Band musicians report to
Washington fully
trained to perform their primary duties in the accomplishment of the band’s
unique musical mission. Therefore, there is no requirement for U.S. Marine
Band musicians to undergo recruit training.
New Marine Band members are instructed by the band’s Drum Major in
appropriate military and band-related subjects. This ongoing process of
instruction gives each musician essential knowledge about his or her role in
the U.S. Marine Corps. "

Excellent!

I would have bet money that the members of any USMC Band; even "THE" USMC Band
have to finish Boot Camp. The Corps would have it no other way and I strongly
suspect that the USN is the same.

Well.... the USMC is, quite literally, a PART of the US Navy. However, most
Marines will not publically admit to that!

So, it would seem that SOME are recruited directly into the Marine Band. I
called a buddy of mine who is a former USMC Recruiter, and he confirmed this.
However, he stated, most of the members of the President's Own did in fact come
from the USMC Field Bands (I believe there are five), whose members do have to
complete Boot Camp.
Those who enter directly from the streets to the President's Own generally have
extensive experience as professional performers, play several instruments, and
have college degrees (usually a Masters) in a music field.

I received the same clarification from John... and was completely surprised
that the Corps lets anyone wear their uniform without completing Boot Camp
training. ::SIGH:: Oh well... yet another belief shattered!!! :)

But you weren't... it's show. You'd be "green." Even Corpsmen got the
