I own one. It sucks. Why can Apple, basically a hardware company, write
better PC programs than Microsoft, which is a software company?

Exactly right.
Consumers ultimately determine the market.
If Apple's OS is so much better then MSFTs dominate platform competitor
wouldn't be Linux.
