Letter From A Retired California Policeman:

A little background on myself: I am a retired southern California
Peace Officer and I lived there for 18 years (1987-2005), bought a
home there, married there, had my son there, and retired there.
California is ground zero when it comes to illegal immigration, with
roughly 1/3 of all illegal immigrants nationwide settling there, so I
am very aware of the problems that it creates. I am also a life long
registered Democrat who is married to a life long registered
Republican, and we have both always voted our conscience rather than
the party line. The one thing that we both agree on is that illegal
immigration is not a partisan issue, it is a matter of right versus
wrong and illegal versus legal. We are now single issue voters on the
subject of illegal immigration.

I didn't live in a fancy neighborhood, just ordinary middle class
working joe's, many in construction. When I first bought my house in
1989 my neighbors, many of them carpenters or big equipment operators,
were making about $20 per hour. By the time that I left in 2005,
their wages had dropped to $9-12 per hour. I just saw a segment on
Lou Dobbs where he indicated that the same thing had happened in the
meat packing industry. In 1980 a meat packer made $19 per hour, but
currently they make $9 per hour. With inflation and adjusted currency
values, this means that these people are making roughly 20% of what
they made in the 1980s. The reason: the market has been flooded by
cheap illegal alien labor which has depressed wages. Why would an
employer hire an American even at the same rate of an illegal alien?
If they hire an American they have to pay workers compensation,
disability insurance, and pay employment taxes that equals up to
another 40% on top of what their pay is, but if they hire an illegal
alien they don't have to pay any of that. Illegal alien labor is not
cheap, it is taxpayer subsidized.

In the years I lived in southern California I watched as my nice
middle class neighborhood went from being a great place to raise a
family to a Tijuana barrio. I watched as suddenly there was trash
left everywhere, junk cars parked in front yards, and rental homes
became meth labs. My husband and I invested $20K in a security system
complete with CCTV and electronic gates. I watched as the gang
graffitti suddenly started appearing along the walls and fences in the
neighborhood. I saw the drug deals going on all the time, the
impromptu parties that would go on every weekend where junkies and
drunks would come and vomit in your front yard. We would not allow
our son to play in the front yard without one of us being there for
fear of what might happen to him. In the first grade my son started
bringing home so much homework that it would take him five to six
hours to complete. We contacted his teacher about this and were told
that there were four non English speaking students in his class so she
had to spend the majority of her time translating for them and the
rest of the children had to get by on their own and complete their
schoolwork at home due to this. I know teachers and aides who were
laid off, not because they weren't good teachers, but because they
didn't speak spanish. School teachers are now required to speak
spanish in California. I read the article when the San Diego School
Board did away with school honors programs because hispanic parents
had complained there weren't enough hispanic kids in the programs and
that this was discrimination. When I was in school, and an honors
student, you were in the honor society because you got good grades,
not because of the color of your skin. It was perfectly
representative of the dumbing down of our schools to accomodate the
illegal immigrant population, and it was infuriating. When our son
would come home from school, we had a rule. Other than grabbing a
bite to eat, something to drink, or using the bathroom, there were no
acitivities until all homework was done. I used to watch the hispanic
kids get off the bus, run home, throw their backpacks over the fence,
and then play in the street until 11pm almost every night without so
much as their parents checking on them all day long. One of these
children was in my son's class and re-doing the first grade for the
third time. I don't believe that hispanic children are dumb, but I do
believe that the hispanic culture, generally speaking, does not put an
emphasis on education and that is why more than 50% of them drop out
before graduating.

I saw drug deals going down all the time, some even had what I
referred to as a drive through drug store where they would meet their
clients at the foot of the driveway to pass off their orders. There
was a murder by an illegal alien one street over from us, who then
jumped the border back into Mexico to avoid prosecution. The murderer
of the little Runyon girl, which made national headlines, lived less
than a mile from us and I even saw him one time before he was picked
up at the local Circle K convenience store while getting a slushy for
my son. I saw armed gang members walking the street every day. I
watched while every home in our neighborhood was broken into over a
one year period. Everyone knew who was doing it, but they were afraid
to push the issue because they belonged to a local street gang. Every
year there are tax increases in both sales tax and income tax and
between the two it is now up to 15%, while 60% of all state taxes goes
to support illegal aliens and their children.

One woman who lived at the end of our street, who was an admitted
illegal alien, had four children, two of whom had been born in the US,
each child had a different father. She received subsidized housing
($800 per month), food stamps, WIC, welfare on her two US born
children ($500 per month), free school meals (we paid $600 per year
for our son to eat breakfast and lunch), free school bus passes (in
California you had to pay $200 per year per child), medi-Cal, medicaid
(we paid $700 per month for myself, my husband and our son), she also
received child support on her two youngest children of $1100 per month
which was paid for by the State since the children's fathers had
skipped out, plus she had a live in boyfriend (not a father to any of
the children) who worked under the table at a day labor site usually
making $400-$500 per week. She also got reduced utilities as a 'low
income family'. When I tallied everything up, she was making almost
double what I earned when I worked full time as a peace officer, even
including my overtime. All at taxpayer expense.

My husband and I moved to Kingston last year because we just couldn't
take it anymore. It is wonderful to live in a place where we don't
have to worry about him playing in the yard, except for picking a few
ticks off him when he comes in from playing outside, and of course we
have told him to be watchful for snakes, but thus far the worst he has
come across was an eastern box turtle and a possum.

I am furious about illegal aliens marching in the streets demanding
rights, privileges and benefits that are reserved for citizens and
lawfully present persons. They claim that they have come here for a
better life, but if they had they would have come here LEGALLY. What
they have come here for is not to assimilate and work for the American
Dream, they have come here to milk us like a cash cow and take
advantage of all the freebies here. THEY HAVE COME HERE TO STEAL THE
AMERICAN DREAM FROM THOSE WHO ARE RESPECTFULLY WAITING THEIR TURN IN
LINE TO DO IT LEGALLY. They knew they were breaking the law when they
came or stayed here, they knew they were breaking the law by living
here and they knew they were breaking the law by working here. Every
one of those marchers represents a job that should be being filled by
a citizen or a lawfully present person.

Congressman Tom Tancredo has the best plan for getting rid of illegal
aliens. They come here for what we consider low paying jobs as the
incentive because it is more money than they can make in Mexico. If
we simply enforced the laws that we currently have by setting up a
database of those who are allowed to work here, punish the employers
of illegal aliens with heavy fines and jail time, eventually they
would not be able to get work here and they would leave of their own
accord. This is called attrition. You cannot reward criminal
behavior without proliferating the problem. We already tried that. In
1986 we granted a 'one time only' amnesty for 3 million (it was
originally projected that it would be 300,000), twenty years later we
have an estimated 20 million or more illegals who are just waiting for
the next amnesty, and that is what the Senate is proposing with their
bills regardless of what they are trying to call it (earned
legalization, pathway to citizenship, guestwork program, etc.). WE
MUST SECURE THE BORDER (WITH A WALL AND MILITARY TROOPS) AND RESERVE
ALL PRIVILEGES, BENEFITS AND SERVICES FOR CITIZENS AND LAWFULLY
PRESENT PERSONS, AS WELL AS DEFINING THE SECTION OF THE 14TH AMENDMENT
THAT READS 'AND SUBJECT TO THE JURISDICTION THEREOF' TO MEAN HAVING AT
LEAST ONE CITIZEN PARENT. If we do these things, there would be a 90%
drop in the illegal alien population over the next three years. If
any sort of amnesty is allowed, and what I mean by this is any program
(no matter what they call it) that allows those who came here or
stayed here illegally to stay in the country, we will be looking at
granting another amnesty for 60 million by 2020.
