Does anyone else have problems wearing a bra? If so, what do you do? My
ribs are a very tender area, especially the lower ones, but some days I just
cannot tolerate the pressure of the bra on my rib cage. I gave up
underwires years ago, but now even the regular ones hooked on the last hooks
hurt (and they definitely aren't too tight). Luckily I am not too well
endowed, so without a bra I mostly just look flat chested, but I do feel
self-conscious not wearing one when I go out. Anyone?

The age-old problem. I still don't have an answer. Been looking for the
"perfect" bra for years. It seems the cheap ones are as good, or better,
than the more expensive ones. I finally switched to front-hook bras, but
it seems I'm frequently tugging or pulling up straps to get more
comfortable even in those. I'm like you, in that a sensitive area with me
is also the rib cage. Wish I could be of more help. Nanny

I gave up wearing traditional bras years ago. I wear tank-style pull-over
sports/leisure bras. For a while, the only thing I could tolerate, due to
costochondritis, was wearing tank tops with built-in shelf bras. I'm not
well-endowed either (lopsided A+/B-) so I always had a hard time finding
regular bras that fit. Sport/leisure bras are self-adjusting. Some people
don't like them because of what they call the 'uni-bra' effect, but this
isn't a problem for us smaller gals. It is for the bigger ones.

The ones I wear are mostly cotton, with just a bit of lycra spandex for
stretch. They are made by Fruit of the Loom. If the pressure of the elastic
band is an issue, tank tops with shelf bras only have elastic along the band
in the front. If you buy the pull-over type, I find tank-style to be easier
to get on then the T-back style. There are front-hook type leisure bras
available too, but I prefer the pull-over tank. And you might want to go
the next size up over your regular chest measurement, for a looser fitting
band. I find that they stretch to adjust to fit over time. I usually buy
38-40's.

Though I'm not a usual WalMart shopper, I bought mine there because of
bundle-packs that give you one free when you buy 3 (which is what I found
this past fall), or in the past, it was buy 2 get 1 free. They typically
have these in the fall, as part of back-to-school deals, so you still might
find some hanging on the displays. I managed to find one in my size. Not
very expensive either. They make front-hook leisure style, and pull over
tank and T-back style sport bras.

I have a pile of bras I have bought and cannot wear. I have found one
made by Barely There that is a light pull-over type bra. Sort of fits
like a sports bra, but much lighter and less tight. My rib cage is so
sensitive that any pressure sends me to the ceiling.

Thank you everyone for your answers. People who don't have fibro have no
idea what torture even little everyday things can be for us. A couple of
weeks ago I was sitting in church and right before the meeting started a
friend came in the pew behind us and grabbed my husband by the shoulders and
gave him the quick "massage" thing. Then he grabbed me the same way before
I could sputter a "please don't" and I thought I was going to pass out
before I could get him to let go. I tried not to make a big thing about it
but I could tell he was miffed when he said, "most people love that." Sigh.
I am feeling terrible today. My Tramadol doesn't seem to be helping and
there is stuff I need to get done. I feel like that old song by
Sting--Every breath you take, every move you make, every step you take,
(only substitue the word hurting for watching) you.

You know those "muscle," sleeveles T-shirts guys wear? Put it on,
roll it up, gather it snuggly and tuck under your breasts. You get
some lift and support and it looks like a sports bra under your
clothes. I don't do this all the time because I have some wonderful,
well fitting bras. But when a drop rain leaves your shoulders with
pain, I wear my T-shirt.

Since I'm mostly homebound, I wear it most of the time.

A few years ago, in church people would do that to me, too and you're
right -- it's torture. The idiots think they are so magnanamously
helpful they just grin and continue the torture. One day I had enough
of it and said, "I don't like to be touched. Please don't do that
again."

Wow! You'd have thought I tried to stab her through her heart! It
got around fast though and I wasn't bothered again. I'm sure people
wondered why this long-working RN could get tthru her work at the
hospital without touching or being touched. I was beyond caring what
they thought and there isn't always time to go into the real
explaination. A happy side note: people stopped shaking my hand --
and that suited me just fine. Too many germs!

Reaching out and massaging anyone's body without express permission is
battery/assault, to me. I fourget which. Even in a church setting
it's just plain wrong.
