alt.mauritius Forum for topics about Mauritius
Charter:
A newsgroup for discussion of any relevant topics concerning life in
Mauritius, as well as experiences of Mauritians living abroad.
Justification of Readership:
At present, no forum covering Mauritius exists on the Usenet, apart
from a few newsgroups on the local Mauritius Telecom news server which
are only accessible to Mauritian subscribers. Yet several tens of
thousands of Mauritians are now scattered across the world, while the
island itself is amongst the most prosperous in Africa, with a booming
tourist industry. Recently, there has been an increase in local
Internet accessibility, with the result of a flourishing forum on the
WWW, as well as the creation of a couple of maling lists. This
newsgroup would enable Mauritians, as well as others who have visited
the island, to keep in touch with recent developments.
Summary of discussion:
Following posting of the proposal on alt.config last week, several
messages of support have been received by:
(1) email,
(2) at the ile-maurice forumt (http://www.ile-maurice.com),
(3) on the local Mauritius Telecom usenet newsgroup
(mauritius.internet),
(4) the mu-online mailing list,
(5) on alt.config itself (even though Mauritius only started receiving
feeds as of Tuesday).
There was also a proposal to alter the proposed name to
alt.culture.mauritius, but in view of the possibility of the later
creation of soc.culture.mauritius, the original name has been
maintained.
