Does anyone know anything about Keystone Lodge #470 in Gratz, Kentucky? My
great grandfather, Dudley Spurr, was a high degree Mason during the late
1800s and I would like to find out more about him.

What does High Degree Mean? There are only 3 degree's in Blue Lodge (what you
are asking about). The highest you can go is Master Mason. I would suggest
you calling the lodge and talking to the secretary. or writing the Grand Lodge.

Your best course would be to contact Keystone Lodge directly and ask
if they have any information on him in their archives.

Hmmm... if by "high degree Mason" you mean he held a 32nd degree
status, this means he was a member of one of the primary appendant
bodies to Freemasonry - York Rite or Scottish Rite. (to oversimplify
dramatically, all degrees beyond the 3rd degree are more properly
considered indicators of "continuing education" rather than rank).
For information on your great-grandfather's role in either body (or
both - they're not mutually exclusive), you might ask the Kentucky
Grand Lodge (via either phone or mail) for contact information on
these appendant bodies.

The contact information I have foy the Kentucky Grand Lodge is:

Grand Lodge of Kentucky Free and Accepted Masons
Masonic Home
Louisville, KY 40041
(502) 893-0192

If you do not have any contact information for Keystone Lodge, the KY
Grand Lodge should be able to help you out on that also. Being as
specific as possible with relevant dates would assist your search
immeasurably. <g>

Hello Vernon,
I wonder if your relative was a Mark Master Mason? If so that would
account perhaps for the name of the Lodge. Maybe its different in the
USA!!
Sincerely,

Dear Brother,
It is done quite different in the USA.
In our Craft lodges we only have the 3 degrees.

EA, FC, & MM

In our Chapters of Royal Arch we have:

Mark Master
Past Master (installed Master)
Most Excellent Master
Royal Arch

All business is done in the Royal Arch. Only time we open on the other degrees
is to confir it and then only.

In Cryptic Masonry we have these degrees:

Royal Master
Select Master
Super Excellent master
all business is done in the Select Master

Commandery of Knights Templar
Order of Red Cross
Order of Malta
Order of the Temple

Temple degree for business.

the Mark degree is just a degree here, not a lodge.
