We now have a very talented Graphic Designer on the team and this is
reflected
in the NEW LOOK Practical Martial Arts site. The Karate, TKD and Kempo
sites
will start to reflect this design philosophy. See the site at

Why do you believe the sport element cannot help the self defence element?
I am not a sport club, but we compete, but this benefits the students.
Granted, not on a street technique level, but with regards to other aspects
(adrenaline etc.) it does.
You are right, the two shouldn`t be confused (they often are), and I often
make a point to my own students that sparring is not fighting. But the two
can help each other.
Also, a lot of your links arn`t working. I tried the test page & the pattern
application links (only one worked). the application of wedging block in
Do-San is a very simplified one, I say this as a wedging block, as in the
pattern would hit the elbows, thus only bending the arms of an attacker with
a decent grip. This block should really be applied before the grab is
enforced, then you would have the distance to do a front kick rather than a
knee. A much better release for a grab can be found in Won-Yo.
BTW, I know you didn`t write this section, the point I am trying to make is
that I teach TKD, with a sporting element, but it is still very practical
for the street. Many teach the patterns with irrelevance, but that is sorely
missing what real TKD is.
just my (constructive) thoughts,
Stuart
