When my company had some cartoon artwork to ship to this guy who won it on Ebay,
I went to Mailboxes, Etc. They then shipped it via Fedex to the States. Sorry,
can't remember what it all cost! I recall there were some restrictions if you
wanted to ship something with glass in the frame...

Shipping paintings is one of the most difficult items to ship there is.
I assume this is a Oil on Canvas painting without any glass in it. You
also didn't mention a value ? This has a great deal to do with how this
gets packed. You also didn't mention if it was in a frame. Sometimes
these have to be packed & shipped separately. The easiest thing for you
to do is take it to a Mail Boxes Etc. or similar pack & ship company.
Most of them won't give you a definite price unless they can see the
piece. The last major painting I shipped I had a custom built crate made
for it at the local cabinet shop. They do this kind of thing all the
time. This was about 3 x 4 feet & cost me about $75.00 to have built.
Shipping with insurance was about $150.00.
As far as payment is concerned if you know the guy, take his check in US
funds. If you don't get a US dollar money order or electronic bank
transfer of funds direct to your account. The bank can give you the
routing numbers. Oh tell him he will have to pay the transfer fees of
both banks or you will end up short on the transfer.
Have fun !
