"$0.00 insertion fees (auction-style listings)
The first 5 auction-style listings that you list on the site in a 30-day
period are eligible for $0.00 insertion fees. The 30-day period starts with
your first eligible listing. You'll have 4 more opportunities to list with
$0.00 insertion fees during those 30 days. After the 30 days pass, the next
30-day period starts with your next listing that's eligible for $0.00
insertion fees.

a.. Only auction-style listings are eligible.

b.. Listing upgrade fees still apply, such as bold or listing in two
categories.

c.. Final value fees still apply. If your item sells, you'll be charged
8.75% or $20 per listing, whichever is lower."

fee.........with out the "free listing"=appx costs $3.00 $2.19+$7.70=$12.89

and never relist the free listing - Always start new. If the item
doesn't sell, your relisting will have a fee, but if it sells they will
reimburse the zero amount. At least with a new relisting, you'll have a
second chance where the second fee will be reimbursed.

I got that email a while back. The incentive is that if you fail to believe
eBay hype about start it low to end up high you can list for what you want
to get and not be out anything if no one "bids".

Is the final value fee any more for these free listings? I haven't sold for
years on eBay and it sure was less then.

Actually cheap stuff works too because $0.00 insertion fee makes up
for the higher FVF to a point, which I recall is somewhere around $20
on other analysis I've seen.

There are a couple of other things you are overlooking... you're not
alone because every analysis I've seen has overlooked these... and
these are the variable saving on listing fee depending on the starting
price and the sell through rate. For items for which there aren't
many buyers, where even at a low starting price there might be no
bids, but which do have some value to the right person if you can find
him, the free listing are ideal. And that's often true even on high
priced items.

Calculating the "best deal" based on the idea the item will sell will
give erroneous answers. It has to be modified by the estimated sell
through rate. Course, that makes it an educated guess. But I think
the free listings are an opportunity to convert some Buy It Now/Best
Offer listings, when selected because the item needs to be exposed to
the market for a long period to find a buyer, to free auction
listings. And that might be true whether the item is expensive or
cheap.
