I did see a nice French impressionist landscape painting starting at
$4,600. But with Christmas coming up I guess I'll have to pass (frown face
here)..

Try Wal-Mart. They're cheaper on everything.
I've noticed that a lot of their auctions close with no bidders. And, while
it was Butterfields, there were a few stories about comporable items that
sold for more in the traditional format than in the Premier format.
It's a different game. I wish them luck!

Maybe on French Impressionist paintings but I'll challenge you to find
anything in Wal-Mart's computer-electronics department that isn't
available elsewhere at a lower price---often substantially lower (20%-50%)
I've made several eBay stores purchases at 70%-80% less than
the Wal-Mart price. I imagine if you're willing to waste the time,
you'll be able to win a few auctions in the same discount range.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I would suspect that the Sothebys name is intended to
imply, if not guarantee, that the goods are indeed legitimate high end
collectables. I would think that the goods sold by Sothebys are examined and
authenticated by legitimate appraisers and/or auctioneers.
I think that the fixed price listings are more suitable for this high end
stuff.
