Piles of stolen airport bags found in US couple's house

PHOENIX - Two people suspected of stealing up to 1000 pieces of luggage from
baggage claim carousels at Phoenix's airport have been arrested by police
who found heaps of the stolen bags strewn throughout their home.

There were so many suitcases that Phoenix police could only give a rough
estimate of their number as they pulled them out one by one and gathered
them in the yard of Keith Wilson King and Stacy Lynne Legg-King's suburban
residence.

"A piece of luggage here, a piece of luggage there, I would imagine gets
stolen out of airports all the time," Phoenix police Detective James Holmes
said. "This is a livelihood. There's a lot of luggage and there's a lot of
victims."

King, 61, and Legg-King, 38, were arrested on Monday local time, and each
was booked into jail on charges of theft of property and possession of
stolen property. Legg-King also was arrested on suspicion of tampering with
evidence. It was not immediately clear how the two are related.

Both denied requests to be interviewed, and it was unclear whether they had
attorneys.

Holmes said investigators do not know how long the thefts have been
happening, or whether more people were involved. All the luggage tags that
would help identify the bags' owners were removed, he said.

Police first arrested King on a misdemeanour theft charge about three weeks
ago when an officer saw him park at Phoenix Sky Harbor International
Airport, take a piece of luggage from one of the baggage claim carousels and
get back into his car. He was released, and police began conducting
surveillance on him.

Holmes said police followed King to the airport on Monday and watched him
take a piece of luggage that wasn't his and return to his home with it. They
found the hundreds of other bags after searching the house Tuesday.

The home was in complete disarray, Holmes said, with the luggage, clothing
and other items including garbage scattered about.

"The amount of luggage being stored inside of the residence was almost
surreal," Officer Kendall Goo wrote in a court document.

Deborah Ostreicher, a spokeswoman for the Phoenix airport, said airlines
stopped checking passengers' baggage claim tickets there sometime in the
last 10 years as a cost-cutting measure.

She said airport officials and airlines are working together to assess
security at the airport and are talking about checking passengers' bag tags
again.

"We're evaluating a lot of different possibilities," she said.

Meanwhile, she said passengers should avoid putting critical medications or
expensive items in checked luggage, clearly mark their bags, and pick them
up as soon as possible after landing.

They do look like a real winning pair alright. Wonder why they were not
selling the empty cases on E-Bay.

Chances are good that they own quite a few soiled shorts. Or at least,
have "borrowed" them.

Did you click on the link to see these two winners?

Frankly, they look like the type who'd keep opening
suitcases and (despite finding soiled clothing), keep
doing it in case there's something better. (Like the
definition of insanity.)

They could have had my suitcase last week, and
saved me the trouble of doing the laundry.

Looking at them I can kind of see why they had piles of empty luggage at the
house still, but that does not mean they were not doing well. Theft from
luggage has LONG been a big problem for airlines. They of course try to not
have it get a lot of publicity, but it's nothing new. The one big solution
has been shot down many times, having camera's on the people handling it.
Ever since 9/11 more and more "good stuff" that used to me carried on, is
now checked through. Picking up your luggage at the other end and finding
things gone is far from unusual.
The last couple times we had to fly, we used Fed-Ex for just this reason.
Stuff we cared about was shipped to us before we left, and sent back when we
left. It was worth the cost to not have to deal with the baggage claim and
theft risk. A lot of people traveling for business can't easily do this
though.

Neither does SAD.

Which HAS to be the most appropriately named airport of all.

And the security at Eden International is abysmal.
No tie down fees, though.

Sharp eyed pilots flying into Thatcher International may note minor
debris on the runway. Such as refrigerators or evaporative coolers.

The places that do this help discourage the people like this story, stealing
the entire bag, but it does nothing to help with the "help" stealing things
out of the bag at transport.
You get your bags home, then find your laptop, or camera, and such is no
longer there. Good luck trying to get the airline to replace it when you
tell them. For a long time this was a BIG problem with firearms. They used
to make you put a big bright tag on the outside of the bag saying it had a
firearm in it. This was like a neon sign for the baggage handlers flashing
steal this one. They finally pulled their head out of their ass and changed
it so the tags are inside the bags now after enough problems. They still
have been fought tooth and nail about stopping the stealing from the bags
though.
