Knowing what you were trying to search for, would help
answer the question.
Oh. I was going to suggest Google, but that'd be the first
thing you'd have tried, so I won't insult you.
Kris
(Waiting for a miraculous, coincidental person to come

The same rules apply to most anything I would think. I am searching for a
variety of unrelated things though.

Google is interesting as you can customize your search but not in the same
way as Ebay. Yahoo doesn't seem to have as many options as Google. Any
other suggestions for a search engine? I'm not sure how many characters
Google allows in their search field. Guess I need to test that if no one
knows.
So you won't say what you're searching for?
We really don't care WHAT it is, but lots of us know how to use search.
Kris
Lets pick a really difficult item - one with a tremendous supply that we
want to filter. Ipod. I'll select a model, then I may filter a color or
two, I might require a minimum storage size, a certain age requirement, and
I'll try to filter out as many broken ones that are being sold for parts as
possible. So the search string could be very long. Way longer than Ebay
will every allow. Like I said, a difficult item to search for if you really
are focused on getting a good deal.
Why would anyone want to buy an iPod on eBay?
Sequence: lowest price first
Check "search descriptions"
Ipod model (pink, blue) -used -parts
The hundreds of results you're going to get, have nothing to do
with any ineffectiveness of eBay's search. It's that everyone and
his dog are listing these things.
Kris
Its just an example of something difficult to search for.

Kris, I was at this level on the second hour on Ebay. Sorry to come across
as a beginner. I kind of live on this website. The key to extracting deals
on Ebay is negative filtering. And that requires very long search strings.
And that's why Ebay's Find search box doesn't work.
>And that requires very long search strings.
Unless you are somehow incapable of using the little group of filters
on the left which let you choose the model, size and color you want.

Well, excuuuuuuuse me.
Why aren't you here, giving US lessons?
i
I realize most of the discussions here are for sellers on Ebay - an area I
am completely ignorant in. In that area I'm always learning here. But I
was just hoping there were some search fanatics like me here. Maybe they're
here but lurking and don't want to give away their secrets...lol. Guess
I'll try the Community area of Ebay.
Well I guess that would work if you were 5 years old. Sheesh people! I
thought I was in a group of knowledgeable Ebayers! How basic can you get?
"Model, size and color"......howls with laughter.
To give you an idea of where I'm at, here's a search string for an item I
surely won't ever need. An Apple Nano. (There are far better players out
there!)
This is the positive search (what I'm looking for).
(Apple,Ipod,I-Pod) Nano
This is what I'm filtering. It won't wrap properly - sorry. I don't use
spaces after the commas because they are functionless and do nothing except
waste space.
-(1st,First,2gb,2-gb,2nd,Second,2g,Accessory,Alike,Altec,Battery,Bluetooth,Case,Cord,Charger,Creative,Data,Cable,FM,Hard,Ipodz,Isock,Like,Lot,Memorex,Needs,Nike,Scratch,Screen,Shuffle,Skin,Strap,As-Is,"As
Is",Broken,Issue,Issues,"Not Working",Parts,P&R,Repair,Repairs,Work)
I used this as an example of a difficult item to search for because there
are so many of them available. Plus dickheads from China and elsewhere
insist upon listing their pointless accessories in the "Player" category and
not the "Accessory" category where they should be. But I'm sure all of you
have to put up with that kind of selfish category swarming that Ebay doesn't
seem to care about but really ruins the buying experience for many. This
search took about 20 minutes to put together. And it may be outdated of
course. But out of this I got 2 or 3 Nanos at screamingly good prices (50%
or less of the typical selling price so it was well worth the time invested.
And if I had wanted I could have bought a few each day at the same price.
For a higher end item the search is the key to everything. So few people
realize it.
There's a slim chance that someone here
hasn't already discovered that.

An iPod is a higher-end item?
I bought my iPod at CostCo. No playing with the computer for the
sake of playing with the computer. No trying to figure out why that
little box called "new" is there.
Kris
I'm giving this one a 2.1
Interesting. Do you know if they allow a long search string? Or how many
characters its limited to? Without a long string I'm really dead in the
water.
There is nobody in this group that seems to have less input than you. You
seem to know almost nothing and say nothing useful. Just a waste of digital
space.
Did I say that?
I said its a "difficult item to search for because there are so many of them
available."
Any idiot can search for unusual items. :) About the only challenging
thing in that area is trying to guess spelling errors and other descriptive
words the seller might use.

Ipods are one of the worst music/audio playing devices ever made. If anyone
analyzes what goes into making a good player an Ipod is not their
conclusion. The only reason they are popular is the public has low
standards of music, low standards of customization and fall prey to Apple's
slick advertising drivel. Why iPod's suck for audio (does any thinking
person watch high quality video on 4" screen???
They don't play FLAC or OGG lossless - the first step to quality audio is
lossless. Who wants to convert hundreds or thousands of files to Apple
lossless because iPod designers are too pigheaded to build it properly in
the first place? Its all about iTunes revenue.
No easy to change battery.
No memory slot - so you're stuck with the storage limits of the player.
MicroSD slot is the only smart way with the 8gb cards so cheap now (around
$20-30). They weigh nothing so you can keep several in your pocket and be
unaware of their presence.
You have to use Apple's lobotomized iTunes if you don't have one of the few,
older iPods that are Rockbox compatible. iTunes is just horrible for anyone
that has a semblance of logic in organization. Its geared towards morons
who only listen to popular music slop. Tags are for mentally deficient
people who can't organize if their life depended on it. (iPhoto is just as
bad.) You can't just copy and paste from Windows Explorer like any normal
person would move music with a player that values user choice. Every tried
creating a folder within a folder in iTunes? Its such an abomination.
There are several more reasons but they escape me now. No thinking person
buys Apple products. They do nothing well. They are a sharply advertised
brand that can't compete so they try to look different. Underneath the
gloss and glimmer they fail miserably. The more you carefully you look at
them the worse they look.
Tell us how you really feel. Don't hold back, now.

To reply by email, remove the word "space"
Try www.misdescribed.com (my website) and try the default search
option for oscilloscope.
What my website misdescribed.com does is it finds all misspellings of
the given word, then truncates the search string to the size
acceptable by ebay, and gives you search results.
You will be astonished to see so many misspellings of this simple word
"oscilloscope".
Anyhow, based on what I know, the limit it 254 characters or a number
close to that.
eBay search mechanism is actually rather powerful.

Nope. I believe the correct term is input. When referring to a discussion
one uses the word input. Output is usually referring to nonverbal
situations unless you're talking about volume level. Which is not the case.
Not that I'm any English expert of course. :)
That is one great idea for a website. I've seen others as well. Good for
you for filling in where Ebay lags!

Well its sure was a lot more powerful last year before that stupid
"Playground" reared its ugly head and is now the only way to search. It
just means you have to have multiple searches for something that before
would take only 1 search. Typical big, faceless, uncaring company.
I wasn't counting posts.
How many did it take her to go from
"Does anyone..."
to
"Typical [et al]..."
???
About as long as it always has in the past.

"You people haven't changed a bit. I've been

Grumpy don't want to help anyone."
Cool site. Searches well. Unfortunately I get an eBay error message
when I click on a listing.

You got it.....and they bitch and moan that we
treat them *exactly* the same every time.

Thanks. I do not promote this website. I mostly use it for myself

I think that they made power search less convenient, but not really
less powerful, (with default "best match" etc), unless I am missing
something.
i
I fixed it... The old URLs used to work...

Thanks,
It appears to be a very useful tool. On occasion I find a good deal on
something that is miss-entered.

Good idea, although the 2 search terms I input brought up a server busy
error.
