Finally, I will reveal truth to those who have not encounted it yet
after all their dedicated years of study and magickal training.
Ofcourse, in magick, gnosis, trance, scrying, etc, there is a strong
element of psychology,,,no doubt. However, if you want the real
answers, and see the visions of your heros like Crowley, or
shamans...then, there's only one door that needs to kicked open. If
you haven't heard it yet, then you missed something. This is the DRUG
equation. If you want to see the parallel worlds and visit dimensions
upon dimensions, then choose DMT. One dosage will not only penetrate
the veil, but kick in the heavy door like only a IRS, BATF or DEA
agent can in the early morning hours! Tattvas open with relative ease.
Angels become geometric Angles, and then you can truly understand what
the mystics said of old. You don't really believe the aborigines and
shamans, yogis & magi did this stuff straight...did ya?
This will get flamed,,,because humanity wants to believe their gods
are real, but a mushroom is the source of the 'call from above'. You
can raise the DMT levels within the pineal, sure, but you will NEVER
experience the fullest understanding without breaking the threshold.
Psychedlics have given us the chemical/kundalini evolution. From
Egypt's blue water lillys to the shaman who knows the exact dose and
combination of medicinal plants. Magick is chemical. Lose the scrying
stone and fill your chalice with some 'jungle juice'..The Tibetan book
of the Dead gives you an inkling on the journey...but be wary...once
you kick asunder them heavy doors, you will know why they are so heavy
and bolted!

When I was young I spent what seemed eons curled up in a ball crying "Make it
stop! Make it stop!" I saw things I wasn't ready to see. Now that my past
likely represents more years than my future I suspect the things I've
experienced in this life have refined me to the point where I'd be ready to
receive whatever visions chemistry might offer. But I also suspect it would
only be fluorescent versions of the things I've already learned from a few
years of military service, a few more years in prison, a failed marriage and
the deaths of people I loved.

There may be some value in the path you describe, but those who are strong
enough to bear it would probably be better served by five or six hours of
inipi. YMMV.

Aw God finally...something of merit to discuss.
Good points, and you will find much agreement from me, but not all. Recent
discoveries and old rediscoveries have led both to the discovery of DMT
production in the pineal gland (Strassman) and the "God Circuit" of the
human brain (Alper and others) and this has brought us closer than ever
before to the realization of Crowley's words from MiTaP:

"We do not believe in any supernatural explanations, but insist that this
source may be reached by the following out of definite rules, the degree of
success depending upon the capacity of the seeker, and not upon the favor of
any Divine Being. We assert that the critical phenomenon which determines
success is an occurrence in the brain characterized essentially by the
uniting of subject and object. We propose to discuss this phenomenon,
analyze its nature, determine
accurately the physical, mental and moral conditions which are favorable to
it, to ascertain its cause, and thus to produce it in ourselves, so that we
may adequately study its effects."

First disagreement, there are ways to activate this system without the
direct ingestion of DMT, or any psychedelics at all, though having
experience of these drugs can be useful in surviving the afore mentioned
process.
Second, the discovery of neurological sources for mystical states of
consciousness does not rule out interaction with a "source" of some kind
outside of the self. While it is tempting to take Alper's view that the
"God Circuit" disproves the existence of God (not exactly his view, but
close to his belief) this is like saying that the existence of eyes and a
visual cortex disproves the existence of light. As uncomfortable as it is
to think so, it remains true, that most evolution has occurred as a Reaction
to something outside of the "self" (as defined by local awareness) and we
developed eyes and a visual cortex as a reaction to what we now call
electromagnetic radiation, mediated by the particular frequencies put out by
our star, Sol. Now the Pineal gland is in many respects similar to an eye
and even functions similarly in some reptiles, apparently degenerating in
man due to lack of use over time, and one of the functions of the Pineal,
aside from sleep regulation, is the production of DMT, which apparently
stimulates the "God Circuit" into action (this claim from experience). So
it is not at all clear to me that the Pineal gland and its functions did not
evolve as a reaction to something outside of the self, something similar to
what we call light.
The experience of the "God Circuit" is somewhat similar to Philip K Dick's
encounter with VALIS, or Vast Active Living Intelligence System, an
experience that leads quickly to the realization of the illusory nature of
experience.
So what if "VALIS"is real, of course we would have to actually be Part of
It. Could it not be that these recent discoveries lend support to such a
notion.
Not asking anyone to make a commitment to belief, only to open the mind to
the possibility.
Some of Strassman's DMT research tends towards similar views, colored by his
own beliefs.

Well, I did get the first K&C of my HGA after smoking myself retarded
on weed. But then again, that was after a few months of intensive
Book 4 work.

I mean, I'm sure plenty of idiot ravers have taken this DMT stuff and
then gone back to being effete Eurotrash idiots just like they were

Moral of the story, I think: drugs aren't bad, but they only do as
much work as you do.

Yes, ofcourse! I myself, do not condone the use of drugs within my
inner circles. However, I have read through newsgroups for so long,
and I see that so many newbies really can't grasp the full
understanding of what the 'heroes' of old were saying. Sure, drugs
aren't necessary for simple scrying, but if one wants a full in-depth
conversation, one on one answers during a goetia evocation, but gets
minimal results...then, they realise something is wrong. Do they
'suck' as a magi? Are they doing 'something' wrong?...Or are they
comparing their results with the likes of those who are under the
influence of smokable 'voodoo' ? ;) Why is the incense so thick?...to
give bodily substance to a spiritual being?..or 'another valid
reason'?...There's a reason why the incense is so thick. In the
brazier is burning hallucinogens,...Nostradamus burned nutmeg, witches
of old used henbane, belladonna, anointments.
Ergot from the holy of holies show bread helped the Israelites from
way back, up to Christ in the temple. "This is MY BODY...this is my
blood"....sounds like Ergot & Red Wine to me ;)

In Yoga you can find the key to your every world. Every hormone that can
be triggered by drugs can be triggered by will. Takes a greater effort
but you will get your results clean, and clean means: balanced. When
diving deep in your souls soon you will overflow with great truths from
all your pores and you better know to make some distinction by then!
(Distinction between good to be true and bad to be true.) Balanced
distinction are not easily made when under drugs. Drugs push just as
well as yoga; yoga gives you much more control.
Drugs are, however the easy way to results, thats for sure.

Bah! Shall I assume you partake in a raw-food diet? Or, *at least*,
your diet excludes refined sugars and caffeine? Otherwise, you are
ingesting *drugs*, Mr. "Clean". Foods consist of chemical compounds,
even all- natural foods. Food causes the production of chemicals
within the body.

What is defined as a "drug" is completely arbitrary, based on social
and cultural morals. Besides, yoga masters have historically used
drugs to enhance their work, whether it's inhaled herbs, ingested
foods or through fasting - fasting causes the release of "drugs"
within the body. But according to you, causing, say, mao inhibition
through ingesting a particular food is somehow acceptable, but
ingesting a maoi pill would be bad?

You know, some of us depend on "drugs" for survival. So why would
taking a drug that slows down my immune system (which is one of the
few I have to take) be acceptable but taking a drug that activates an
elevated awareness be unacceptable? When you depend on a man-made
chemical for survival, it changes your perspective on what is "food"
and what is "drug". Everything that is ingested becomes viewed as a
bio-chemical tool, and the hypocritical attitudes people have about
"drugs" become glaringly obvious.

Do any of you magiky folk replace the LBRP with the SBRP in your
ceremonies?
or have you used both? or would that be redundant assuming you did it

find me one teacher/preacher/magus or whatever that has ever been
levelheaded, that has ever explained or attempted to explain "reality" (for
lack of a better word) with lucidity. I agree that neither McKenna or Leary
were levelheaded about the subject, but I don't think that a pioneer has the
capablilities of accurately describing a thing as it really is; they can
only relate it to the outside world through their own understanding.
Eitherway, if you want to do some non Mckenna/Leary reading on this subject,
that of DMT and its connection to magick, read "DMT The Spirit Molecule" by
Doctor Rick Strassman. Its the closest thing your are going to get along the
lines of a scientific investigation. But no amount of reading and
speculation is going to get you anywhere. Either you do the DMT or you
don't.

High enough doses of psychedelics will subdue the ego. The one pointedness
that Dhyana is characterised by can be created with certain chemicals, and
the effects can last, on certain psychedelics, between 2 and 6 hours.
Psychedelics alter perception, as do a million other things. Should we not
explore what they have to offer and teach us? Or should we not concern
ourselves with things that alter perception?

A properly executed LBRP will succeed in subduing the ego. ..(Isnt this
alt.magick.serious???) As for the cult following, 13 year old tennie bopper
wicc-ians trying out the lbrp, I think that is just a built in safety.

HOLY SHIT! but if you believe it, and it works.... Everything that is built
on logic can be destroyed by logick, simply because logic is false. The
primal assumption is not a proof. But the idea is to attain a certain
result. If you smear shit on a wound and it heals instantly...

Both, when I work "heavily." To use a shaky analogy, banishing Lesser
Pentagram is cleaning the room, Greater or Supreme Pentagram is
rendering it aseptic.

Or on the invoking side, Lesser Pentagram is laying out the paints,
Greater/Supreme is mixing specific colors on the palette.

Ta. So do you mean the Lesser always goes hand in hand with the
performing of the Greater?

I've played around with both before, but haven't applied them very
ceremonially much.

I could just experiment with them and see for myself. But for now i
have many other ceremonial components to consider, so i want to just
first find and establish some working rudimentary groundwork without
having to go over too many finer details.

The SRP's are one of the more underused aspects of the GD legacy, so
far as I can tell. Part of the reason for this could be that many
people cut their magickal teeth on Modern Magick, wherein Don Michael
Kraig introduces the SIRP and then hardly (never?) mentions it again,
instead using the Watchtower Ritual as a one-size-fits-all invoking
solution.

But to the extent the SRP is used, it is probably used more for
invoking than for banishing.

Slightly off the topic of your question, Ben Rowe has a very good
essay on the Hexagram rituals:

http://www.hermetic.com/browe/hexrit.html

Whether or not you like his reinterpretation of the LVX signs/INRI
formula, the essay is very good at illustrating how the Hex. ritual
can be used for any number of purposes. Substitute 'elemental' for
'planetary' and 'pentagram' for 'hexagram', and it might answer some
of your questions.

Or maybe not. Anyway, it's worth reading.

Glad you raised that.

What is your sincere opinion of the Pentagram and hexagram rituals

After all, there's only so much time you want to devote to the

Well, it all depends on what you want to do.

My first and only experience with the Watchtower opening was this:

I read it - sotto voce, aloud but only whispering, on the subway home
from work one day. At the point of the abbreviated First Enochian
Call, I was completely overwhelmed by overpowering visions. This
convinced me that:

a) magick is really f@cking cool. and,
b) it would be a long, long time before I would ever do a Watchtower
opening again.

Don't get me wrong, the watchtower opening is a *great* ritual. But
at this point in my magical career, I really don't have any use for
that much force, let alone the proper equilibrium with which to
control it. Right now I don't have any needs that an invoking
hexagram ritual can't take care of.

When, however, I am done with my exploration of the hexagram ritual
and the Mass of the Phoenix (my current projects - the one nicely
complements the other) I plan to start on the Bornless Invocation.
Just as a good Solar Invoking Hexagram gives tons more juice to a
MotP, so - I think - a Watchtower opening would supercharge a
Bornless. That being said, I wouldn't add the opening until I was
pretty far along in the invocation.

As always, your mileage may vary. But the basic point is, choose the
right tool for the right job. If all you need to do is charge a
talisman or something, using a full watchtower opening would kind of
be like using a sledgehammer to bang in a nail.

One more thing I will say about the Watchtower opening: it's got
style. Although there's a lot of stuff to memorize, it all flows off
the tongue and sounds good, in contradistinction to a lot of rituals.
Like the analysis of the keyword in the BRH? Try as I might, I can't
find a way to do it that doesn't sound stilted and contrived. I've
taken to using the signs of NOX instead of LVX, in no small part
because they don't have any awkward text associated with them. Ben
Rowe's modifications are an improvement, but still not up to the
standards of any of the GD temple openings.

The rule of thumb for me (which I think is pretty much plain vanilla)
has been:

- you always open and close with the Lesser Banishing Pentagram.
- If you invoke by Greater or Supreme in the course of a working,
then banish by the same "level" as you wrap it up.

Some exceptions in practice: if I open by Watchtowers, I find that
closing with Lesser Hexagram and Pentagram is sufficient to clean up.

These are such flexible and powerful tools each of us has to figure
out the best uses for them. I found that the examples of Z2 rituals
(and writing a couple of my own) were the biggest help but I like
precise high liturgy ritual, rich in the rolling turn of phrase, so it
matches my personal aesthetic (I've always enjoyed doing Shakespeare
or neoclassical stuff like Lion In Winter too, so at least its
consistent (g)).

Sure. If I were consecrating a talisman of Fire and invoked Fire by
Greater Pentagram as I built up to the rite, I would banish Fire by
the Greater Pentagram as I closed down after completing the
consecration. If I invoked by the Supremes, with the Spirit Pentagram,
and the Enochian, etc. I would banish the same way at the end.

It isn't always always necessary, and sometimes just Lesser Hex and
Pent at the end will do fine, especially if there was no specific one
thing invoked - eg. I open by Watchtower, do some work without
specifically invoking an Elemental or Planetary force, and then close
down. Lesser rituals clean up just fine.

Sometime in Winter (or are you south of the Equator)?

Lemme see...31 min to 0800, then 9 hrs, then 9 min, so day is 9 hs 40
min long, 9 x 60 = 540, 580 min to this day, 580/12=48 minutes or so,
so an hour of the day is 48 minutes long.

Note that you don't have to close before the hour elapses, as long as
you open, seal your working space, during the planetary hour. So you'd
want to start the ritual sometime between 0729 and 0817.
