I'm going to cut to the chase and spell it out. I made a wand out of
1/2 inch wooden dowling and two metal LIPSTICK TUBES (the caps). They
look brass but I'm sure they're just painted. I painted the wand black
then applied a coat of shellac. Then came the lipstick caps on each
end. It looks prety nice and didn't cost me hardly anything.

VANISHING WAND
This is an old P&L trick, not an invention of my own. I am, however,
using props of my own invention.
Effect:
A wand is shown and banged on the table top to show its solid. The wand
is then rolled up in a newspaper and torn (or broken) in half to show
the wand has vanished.
Method:
You're going to need two of the metal lipstick tubes described above,
preferably 1/2 inch inner diameter. The next item you'll need is what is
known as a wand shell; this is a heavy cardboard tube about 12 to 15
inches long. For this I use a coathanger you can get from the cleaners,
its the wire hanger with the heavy cardboard tube running across its
bottom length. Take several of these and paint them black. I leave them
on the wire hanger and paint them, then just hang them in a well
ventilated area to dry. It couldn't be more perfect.
After they are dry stick one of the brass lipstick caps on each end. If
its not a snug fit wrap some string around each end then stick on the
cap, repeat until it fits. Don't use glue for obvious reasons.
To perform take the wand and bang it (the ends) on a solid surface,
preferably wood so it doesn't chip the metal. Then wrap the and in a
newspaper and break it in half, repeat and break it into quarters.
You can produce a duplicate wand (completly solid) from somewhere else.
If you have a spectator on stage you could produce it from the back of
his coat using the 'hoo' principle, which I won't detail here. Other
possibilties are a "Flip stick' type appearance or even a Fantasio
candle to wand set-up.

I love it when I can make an expensive looking prop with off-the-shelf
items costing me practically nothing. I recently fashioned an expensive
looking brass and wood wand with things in almost any home. I'm not
married so I had to use a couple of products I found in my lady friends
purse (ok...we all know I use the services of a prostitoot).
