Just read a post about LPS-1 in an ultrasonic sink for cleaning lock
cylinders. Sounds like a good way to clean and recondition all sorts of
padlocks, cyls, etc.

Are there negative aspects I should be aware of before trying this method?

TIA, Ralph

I had such a set-up and found it didn't get much use. The time it took was
forever compared to flush and wipe methods.

About the time I had mastered getting the toothpaste back in the tube, then
they come up with this striped stuff.

I used LPS-1 in mine. The ultra sonic vibrations did the work of
loosening the junk and the LPS-1 lubricated the parts as it was
cleaning. All I needed to do was to drain the excess fluid from the
parts prior to re-assembly.

The LPS Super Cleaner works great to flush out gunk. Blow dry and
then apply a little LPS-1.

Probably because LPS or WD40 has a large percentage of solvent.

I disagree on the graphite. My experience is that the only time it causes
much mischief is when so much is used as to cause a mechanical blockage but
it will flush out as it does not stick to anything.

I know you hate the stuff but Schlage and other major manufacturers use it
on their brand new locks with no problem.

If you are not part of the solution, you are not dissolved in the solvent.

The keys make black spots on the clothing...I _hate_ this!

In Germany I have never heard any manufacturer recommending its usage.

when repining a new lock, or an older lock that I've cleaned up, I lightly
dust the plug and pins with graphite for the initial lubrication and
break-in. I use a sable artists brush, dipped in graphite, so that I leave
a very fine coat on all moveable parts. Thereafter, for routine maintenance,
I use LPS-1. System seems to work OK for me.
