Does any one out there know of a spacer for a key machine for cutting a
Best key? My key machine sets off of the shoulder and there is no shoulder
on a Best key. I have an idea on how to build one, but if there is one out
there already made, why should I take the time to re-invent the wheel.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Best keys gage off the tip. They do, you can too. No need
for a spacer. Curtis used to make spacers for Ford five pin
keys, but they won't work on Best. Bend a paper clip
straight, and put that in the vise with the key, less likely
to throw the key across the room (DAMHIKT).

They actually guage off of a cut out on the underside of the key, hence my
design idea. I could turn out a decent set if I had access to a good metal
mill. I guess I will tour out a set by hand and see how that works. I'll
keep you posted.

Edward:

It sounds to me as if you don't cut very many keys and are therefore
not fully comfortable dealing with keys that do not have the shoulder
stop on them so they chuck up to the jaws on the key machine nicely
all by themselves...

You can align the BEST style keyblanks by their tip stop, the point
with a key duplicating machine is that you take the sample key
in the tracing jaw and the blank key in the cutting jaw making sure
that they are properly aligned with each other... Try lining up that
undercut tip stop with right-hand edge of the jaw -- rather than
worrying
about the shoulder stops on the left side of the jaw...

When you have cut several thousand keys you can do this almost
by touch, looking only to verify that they are lined up perfectly
before tightening the jaw and cutting the blank key...

The preferred method of cutting BEST keys is using a code machine
or punch to originate additional keys as required...

The tip design is fairly consistent. From the originals to
the aftermarket blanks. Of course, you can build a set of
spacer guides, most likely. Yes, let us know how things work
out.

Am I missing somehting here? When you duplicate a best key from an orginal
you tip stop it. Simple as that. Am I wrong? I've used Rytans, Orions,
Ilcos, Keils, never had a problem with a Best key. Or a ford key or any
other key without a shoulder. If you have a composite key blank use a
paper clip or a key extractor or what ever. I prefer to use the blue punch
and a decoder but duplicating is easy enough.
