Google is going to release a new operating system bassed on the linux kernel, called Google Chrome OS. It is going to be designed for laptops, but it will later be expanded to run on other platforms.

What a Marvelous and wonderful way to poke a HUUUUGE and gaping hole hole through the Microsoft monopoly. Let us hope that Google does not attempt to "freeze out" Ubuntu and Debian. That would result in just another "intellectual property" monopoly.

I use linux mint. It is an elegant distro of linux, a fork off ubuntu. It is extremely easy to use. You can try it out by burning a CD from the ISO file (available linuxmint.com) and running it on your computer. If you like it, you can install it.

Dream on. Microsoft is too established and way too draconian in its business practices to every let that happen. The best that can be hoped for is that "Open Source" develops a niche market large enough that more and more software and hardware companies find it "profitable" to support it.

If people stop using Windows, Microsoft goes bankrupt. No "draconian business practices" can change that. -- Fiat Justitia Ruat Caelum

And you thought the AIG bailout was a lot of money...

I heard about it the other day. I doubt that I'll try it since I'm very content with my current favorite distro, Ubuntu. But it's nice to know that Google will be advancing the Linux and open source causes--and Google is big enough and powerful enough to make a splash.

Yes... It does. But one really wonders why those people continue to suck on Microsoft software. Open Office should have put an end to it. It is sort of like IBM was in the 70's. No VP ever got fired for choosing IBM.

There will be one BIG problem left, the thing between the chair and the keyboard, see how it went for netbooks with Linux, people didn't bu those, no matter if they had a lower price and a better specification that those with microsoft installed. It will be the same problem for Google and they have the other issue of making a distribution which more than others depends on that the user is online. Then we have the agreements which the OEM has with microsoft, which says that if they install another operating system on their products than microsofts, then they have to pay more per copy, so it will be a economical gamble for the OEM and they may note be prepared to do that so soon after the failure with the traditional Linux distributions.

Sadly we have to see them around as long as the majority of computer users are ignorant about the shitty quality they get from micrsoft and think games are important for a computer.

Regretfully I disagree ! M$ has many more fingers in many other pies, to go bust. Wins may become a minor OS, but M$ will probably be still around for many years to stir the pot !

Fortunately, that's starting to happen. A /lot/ of large corporations are fed up with paying unreasonable licence fees for broken software - migration is happening apace, though the MS shills don't want to believe it!
Yes, a world without Microsoft would be excellent, but it is so enrooted into our world and has invaded so many places I don't think it will ever leave. :*( j{ ,
