I can install Publisher in Wine ok but when I try to open a document I
get an "out of memory" error. (machine has 3 gigs)
I posted this problem a few months back and concluded that my project
was simply too large. (about 1 gig)
Today I tried to open a very small Publisher document (only 35k)
and got the same "out of memory error"
No big deal I can run Publisher natively...
but was wondering if anyone has managed to get Publisher running in Wine
For the most part, Wine works quite well for running Win-apps
and Publisher is the only one giving me problems
I would recommend you try to use different versions of wine and different
versions of publisher. Wine has had loads of changes the last 6 months and
publisher has big code changes and new bugs each new version.
Other alternatives is to run a VM using Suns VirtualBox or vmware, with a
fully installed microsoft environment, that way you don't have to dual boot.

From work I have got the experience that publisher is yet another crap-ware
from microsoft, the only thing they really seems to success with is PR-campaigns.

Wonder if you'd care to share about a 150 word synopsis on that?
OK
I do volunteer work for a local non-profit organization
and I occasionally need to create a publication.
I am now working on my second one in about a 3 year period of time.
I do the work at home...then take it into the organization for them to
do the final editing, conversion to .pdf and printing.
So they can work on it...not only do I have to use Publisher...
but I have to use the exact version that they are using.
For me to boot over to Windows and run Publisher on a few rare occasions
is no big deal...but I just thought it would be nice if I could do it
all from Linux.
I tried a lot of things and it looks like I'll need to run it
natively...I don't do a project like this often enough for it to cause
me much trouble

Just wondering if at some point in time it might be worth trying to
introduce the folks you volunteer for to scribus - it is multi-platform
and would be free for them. Might be a solution if they don't have to
deal with many documents from several sources.

I don't use publisher, but if it is any good it should be able to import
some other formats.
Well I have this project pretty well wrapped up...
Once the final editing is done, the organization I volunteer for
converts it to a .pdf
So I'm thinking that maybe next time I can look for an Open Office
alternative.
I know that Publisher has an option to save as a .ps file
and from there it can be converted to a .pdf
So I bet that I can do something similar in Linux...
just have not looked into it yet
I think Scribus is a great suggestion
If I can save the document (or convert to) .pdf I think that will do the
trick
I had a look at Scribus and think that should do the trick.
I see it has the ability to save as pdf
Well it was not so good.
Scribus worked and we were able to save the document as a pdf
but when we transferred the Scribus document to my machine...
the images were all blank.
I could click on "properties" and the listing was correct
but the image itself was not visible
tried both my Windows machine an my XP machine and the results were the same
but from her machine, all looks normal
no time to fool with it now as we have to get the project done this week
Will fool with Sribus some more though
but not right now
I have the version of Publisher 98 that came with the Small Business
edition of MS Office 98, and I've used it over the years to create some
documents. About six months ago I tried using it with the version of
Crossover that CodeWeavers gave away last year during the Lame Duck
Challenge. It installed just fine, and seemed to run at first, loading
and printing documents I'd created with Publisher and Windows 98SE. It
even worked fine to create a document while in Linux - until I tried to
print it. That failed altogether. I forget how now - whether with an
error message or what - but it refused to print. The saved document
wouldn't load with the old Windows 98SE machine, either. Or maybe it
wouldn't save - again I forget. The point is, even the old version of
Publisher wouldn't work for me.

Well the version of Publisher we are using is 2003 and in XP it works
fine. The project is almost done now and then, when I have some free
time I'm going to fool around more with Scribus and hopefully figure out
where we went wrong
The time to try to work that out is not when you're under a deadline -
obviously, but rather when you have time to 'fiddle' with it. What sort
of projects are you doing? Would OpenOffice Presentation suffice? It
would be a lot like powerpoint and could even produce pp files.
Anything that will give me a pdf when I'm done
should do the job
I've used OO Presentation to do that with some posters I've drawn up. I
also used it to submit pages for a church directory - specs called for PP
files, so that's what I output and it was accepted with zero problems.
I've also found OO Presentation to be a lot easier to use (at least for
me) than powerpoint.

Though I liked the fact that Scribus had the option to save the document
as a pdf...
in addition to the problem of the document not working on another
machine...it was a bit cumbersome to use as all photo editing *and* even
text had to be edited externally...it was just too time consuming to use.
Since these Publications are nothing too complicated
I am sure there are plenty off apps that would work...
but of high importance would be the ability to save (or export) the
document as a pdf
