so paris... what can i tell you? the eurostar is wonderful. 3 hours from
middle of london to centre of paris, no stops! very smooth, very quiet,
unlike any british train i've ever been on. for those of you worried about
the idea of the tunnel, i'd liken it to flying at night... its that smooth
and possibly quieter. having done the ferry 3 times previously and having
had 2 rough crossings, this has to be the answer!
we hit the rive gauche latin quarter friday night. very lively and busy.
moules mariniere followed by poulet et frites and then mousse au chocolate!!
found a brilliant bar full of sorbonne students looking incredibly beatnik
like <g>, guess its the artiste in them. a few calvados' later we made our
way back over the seine under the shadows of notre dame.
saturday saw us doing the tour de eiffel, i reckon empire state is better
but shhhh! we caught the metro and were joined by jazz buskers which was
great fun!! then soaked up some impressionist work dans la musee d'orsay....
ahhh monet's bridge over giverny and water lilies, that was cool. too much
art for me in one day but well, you gotta do what you gotta do.
we found a fab bistro saturday night and chatted to a couple on the next
table, their english was far better than my french ever will be, thank
goodness! they seemed very reasonable too until the management decided
otherwise and bodily ejected them! we sat there, chins on table, exclaiming
"law suit, law suit"!! never did discover what that was all about but it was
very entertaining and dramatic in a way only the french could do. lots of
gesticulating and slamming tables and chairs.
sunday we left our little hotel a few yards from the folies bergere and
wandered off for a quick cafe au lait and croques monsieur before catching
the train back to blighty. ohh la la, quel grande weekend!
as an aside... my american friend was very concerned in bars and restaurants
etc as to whether she was ok to smoke. "this is the continent", i said, "
they dont give a hoot over here!". i mention this because i saw some posts
in another thread about the smoking issue. as a non-smoker, i did find that
it got a little too much. its quite amazing how different cultures view
things. c'est la vie ;o)
