When I was a Catholic it meant I would give up something for Lent starting
today.
It was great---for it not only did it make one aware that Easter was coming,
but also taught great self discipline.
I learned from this that if one can control small things in their life it
was a small step to control big ones also.
Why not try it....
The rewards are great.

I'm glad you are here and "hear" so I know I am not crazy sometimes----LOL
I think some of the miscommunication is because many followers can not
believe people like Ape and I can follow another path and still be of good
conscience.
The assumption seems to be if you have rejected what we still believe in you
either you never where a "true follower" "never understood it" or you are
bad, evil, of the dark side, etc. It's NEVER assumed you changed paths
because it did not appear valid in your opinion and you made an informed
decision.
It's the ---giant---- gap IMO that you, me and most who here who follow
different paths have experienced.
As you say the best way to deal with it is just not deal with it and expect
a worse possible interpretation on any post that involves their beliefs. I
expect every one of my posts about Christianity to be examined under a
microscope with the hopes of finding some way to assign me an evil motive.
It does not matter how far one has to bend the rules of logic to find it, it
will be found.
IMO nothing you or I are can say will make a difference for it's a
conditioned reflex and done with good intentions.
BTW I respect the 'good intentions' part and knowing this is it's basis it
does not bother me.

The UU Service Committee sponsors a program called "Guest at Your Table"
starting Thanksgiving and going through New Years, where you keep a box
on the dinner table and add enough cash at each meal to feed one more
person. You hand the whole shebang in after Jan. 1.
I did it this year, and was pretty amazed to see how it added up. :))

My wife and I have been observing a 'pagan Lent' (Imbolc to Ostara)
for several years. This year I gave up caffiene (including chocolate,
which is the tough one at our office). In past years we have given up
T.V. (that one stuck so we can't use it anymore), and food packaged in
plastic (very tough and very eye opening).
One explanation of the practice I heard from a Catholic priest which I
particularly like is that by giving up something you don't want to
give up, you can teach yourself that this habit is not your God.
I also like the Lent practice of adding service to others rather than
or in addition to giving up something. It helps remind us that we can
express our connection to the Divine by connecting meaningfully to the
expression of the Divine made manifest in creation. I've only used
that path once, because it is hard to make it a daily practice which
would be the ideal way to observe Lent. Maybe I could make a small
act of service a daily practice, but with a child and another on the
way, and an exciting but increasingly demanding job, it is tough
adding to my schedule. So I'm searching around for what I could
gracefully (pun intended) give up permanently and replace with
connection through service.
Bob "decaf posting" Duniway
You know, I had the exact same questions reading Dennis' post. Then
it occurred to me that I'm doing the same thing at work, assigning
personality/bad faith explanations to a few folks in another
department who I think are pursuing an agenda at odds with the best
interest of the university where I work. I even had a recent
'confirmation' of my suspicions from an insider who is leaving.
Unfortunately for me, I practice a daily meditation that involves
memorizing passages from various sacred texts, and going over them
slowly in my mind while attempting to just focus on the words and calm
my tendency to analyze. The passage that has tripped me up is Matthew
Ch. 5, particularly:
43
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour,
and hate thine enemy.
44
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do
good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use
you, and persecute you;
45
That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he
maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain
on the just and on the unjust.
46
For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even
the publicans the same?
47
And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do
not even the publicans so?
Wow. Clearly there is a disconnect between this level of love and my
small view of those folks at work. I'm going to keep working on this
standard. It will be tough, and I will undoubtedly fall short pretty
often, but as the next verse says,
48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is
perfect.
Ignoring the gendered anthropomorphizing of the Divine in all of this
text, I think it makes sense to aim for high standards, and it also
makes sense to recognize that I'm just as imperfect as the next guy.
So imagine the irony of starting to judge Dennis, then seeing what I
was doing. Let's see, where is that verse about judging the splinter
in your neighbor's eye. Maybe that should be next on my list.

I can't imagine what I might give up or better yet, how I would serve
differently, my philosophy about life is to do what has been put in front of
me, many times it is a kind word to an unhappy person (being a daily transit
rider provides lots of those opportunities), small opportunities that just
seem to be part of life......feeding those table dancers at christmas still
burns bright in my memory, they were precious cause I got to be good to
someone(s) who needed it.
I like what you had to say Bob, I like your honesty.
Speaking of honesty, the other night JD and I were talking about unsolicited
porn opportunities that seem to come via email almost daily. He asked me if
I ever visit those kind of sites....I said....you can't meditate on a
regular basis and lie....of course I do....i just don't go through the doors

I don't know, I think of that text where Jesus says obeying God is more
about mercy and not sacrifice.

I don't think this is the same as the Christian concept of sacrifice though.

That's why Christ said it is all about mercy. I think He is correct.

A second strand of the idea for me is that sometimes by sacrificing one
thing, you get (or give) something better :))
An example - by giving up TV, you find time for other activities that
might be more beneficial.

Also, it may take time to assess the benefit - thinking here of Ape's
comment on Vietnam. There is always good to be taken, and so the
sacrifice is not in vain.
