Post modernism is a term which is used to describe various philosophies and
theologies which question the certitude of the assumptions of the modernist
era. Very briefly, the pre-modern era was marked by the complete social and
political domination of the church. The modern era began with the
Enlightenment of the 17th century and was marked by the assumptions of
logical positivism, rationalism, reason, the "scientific method" etc.
Whereas the pre-modernist took the theology and symbolism of the church to
be absolute, the modernist assumed the logic of science to be absolute.

In contrast to both of these paradigms, the post-moderist says there ARE no
absolutes. There is no "pure reason." All meaning is local and contextual.
The "metatheories" of modernist logic are as culturally determined as the
pre-modernist assumptions and, furthermore, they serve the interests of the
dominant political and social groups and, by definition, marginalize others.
The post modernist looks at the constructions of the prevailing theories
contextually according to the particular mode of domination which they serve
and offers counter or deconstructions based on alternative views.

Clear as mud?

Hefty stuff for me. I'll have to re-read it a few times. This is a bit

Speaking of, i'm going out on a limb and posting a poem i wrote as part of an
essay i wrote called "The Modern Century: Unsuitable for Children." A part of
the poem is the way the words on the page are formatted. That might become lost

Glumsad and Blackcoat Stiffcollar

Glumsad returned from the forest
he had painted a tree
points of light
and sun-glitter

off the canvas
he was pleased there was light
he hung the painting beside some dark Jesus
and awaited his execution

Blackcoat Stiffcollar was pissed
Glumsad you bastard
you painted a tree
we don't paint trees we paint Jesuses
dark Jesuses hung on trees but not just trees
there must be a Jesus on the damn tree
yellow skinny ones with sad eyes maybe
not bright with infused light
take it back or die
Glumsad, fearful, ran into the forest

where he sat rotting in the bush
astheyearsflewpast

Glumsad's painting was ripped
off the wall by the masspeople
who shouted `that is not art that is crap'
then they removed their drawers excreted on the canvas
and threw it amongst the trees in the forest
where it lay

Glumsad rolled around in the dirt
Fuck them if they can't take it
his hair grew long
he didn't cut his nails or brush his teeth
he began to stink and let his clothing wear

Donald-Vronski-Choy-Klein-Muhamud-Jones
parked his watercar
having travelled from Internationaland
and walked into the forest to take a leak
he found Glumsad's painting
cleaned off the shit and said
I've seen trees like this

Years later Glumsad found a swan--
tore its wings off
at last found himself running through the park
naked
covered in swanblood
wings strapped on back
in his hand the Book
his hair flowed behind like sinewy

Powerful.

For the pre and post wars are still being fought today and the results are
still the same.

The cause is still "The Modern Century: Unsuitable for Children "

It's shouted from the roof tops.

I like the mix of crude with passion, pain and the "cause".

I don't know how to say it simpler.

The church (Catholic) controlled the pre-era with dogma and authority

Logical thinkers controlled the post-era with public feedback as to what
sold and what did not. It was free enterprise of the mind.

OK, I got the first part. The church controlled pre-modernist thinking. What
I don't get is the second part. Logical positivism isn't related to public
feedback or free enterprise, at as far as I am aware of.

The logical thinkers who made it were 'popular'. No group forced their
thinking on others (with only a few exceptions). Public opinion (mostly the
upper class, but at least some not just a small group) for the most part
decided who survived and who died out and which ideas evolved.

An Example evolution is popular because many accept it. No group dictates
this, so it means the public majority does.

I like Emerson, because I like Emerson.

I don't know if I agree with that, Dennis. Not all segments of the
population had a say in this, so I wouldn't say it was popular or public
opinion so much as it was a dominant class whose ideas permeated the entire
society

In terms of ideas, the post-modernist perspective is to examine them from
the point of view of who is left out. It makes for some interesting
perspective.

The question is, is there really such a thing. The post-modernists would
argue that our ways of thinking are largely culturally determined and need
to be deconstructed until an alternate vision can emerge.

My first thought as I read this... Perhaps Post Modernism is just a third
era when the philosophy of Religion is contextual and culturally determined,
with the practitioners of such equally convinced they have the correct view
as those who went before... just one more step in the search for an
intellectual understanding of a spiritual experience (what IS and has been
throughout the history of humanity).
