Mat's home, so I'm not spending allot of time online....... we've been

well, we were going to put in the patio........ well that came out to
$1100......... so thats on hold for now......... we still have to move the
plants though....... so are making a raised bed further over in the
yard.......... this is tomorrows major project as today was reclaiming an
area where grass had taken over, moving plants, putting new plants in (i can
not walk into a garden store & leave empty handed..... it just doesn't
work)...........

new plants: 2 purple daylilies, 1 soft yellow daylily; 1 nile lily (to
replace the one that died); 1 white rose bush; 2 red salvia; 4 red
impatients; 4 white impatients.........

transplanted plants: 3 dianthius (today) for tomorrow: 2 inca lilies; 1
rosemary; 1 thyme; 1 savory; 1 mum;

of course tomorrow we have to go back to the garden place for the brick for
the raised bed...... and who knows what i'll walk out with................

My current challenge is moving the Sweet Williams. As anyone knows who has
had them any time, they take over, and it's hard to know where one ends and
the next begins. I grew these from seed back in the city and brought them up
here with us. We now have a sort of mat of them in two places about 4 feet
across each, which both MUST be moved. So basically what I'm doing is
dividing the mats up into squares the size of my spade, and any plants that
get sliced in half in the process will just have to forgive me. The
deplhiniums really took offence at being moved in Spring and slowly died
over two days. Everything else is now in buckets waiting to either go back
in at the new level, or found a home elsewhere. Just one tree to take out
and I can move the wheelbarrows in. Martin has finished filling the rock
garden with soil, and now I just have to fill it with plants, not just
rocks. This afternoon I caught two roosters having a dust bath at the wide
end. The ducks finally succeeded in emptying my strawberry patch, having
pulled the last few out by the roots. I will NOT be beaten. I am going to
re-plant it and put a fence round it. These strawberries will be worth $1
EACH by the time I'm through, good thing they're perennials.................

I once heard Thassla Crusoe say that the first thing her plants had to learn was that she was the boss...and as soon as they did that they were in for along and healthy life...
She said that as she was using a hatchet to divide an overgrown Bird of Paradise she had inherited from her daughter.

your sweet william sounds like my dianthius......... this stuff is tough, so
it should survive the move and the trauma of having to "break" it out of the
grass that had invaded....... and being nice, good grass it rooted THROUGH
the roots of the dianthius .......... made for a really interesting
extraction........

forgot about the trees.......... around the oak tree i have spearmint
growing.......... well the grass did the same thing as it did with the
dianthius, but sometimes from greater distance....... i'd pull a grass stem,
and a spearmint plant 4-6" away would pull up!!! so i gave up........ dug
EVERYTHING out.......... picked the spearmint out & replanted it around the
oak tree......... we'll see if it survives............

family so we're on the same project essentially.

Thankfully it only has to be done every 10 or 15 years.

It's not a plant I'm familiar with. The big division this year is a clematis that the previous owners decided would look good growing up the TV tower. It's a good idea, to hide the ugly steel tower. But it never flowers as well as it might as it doesn't get enough Sun there. Unfortunately its roots are entwined around the tower's "roots"................

Try giving Clematis a good dose of lime....the TV tower being metal may have acidified the soil as it oxidizes....I never had much luck with Clematis til I started liming every spring.
 
You know that there are a lot of varietals among Clematis...and some need pruning at different times of year from others...and some none at all.
 
Bird of Paradise...is a long lived tropical so I only put it outdoors ( in its pot) for the 2 months of high summer...the rest of the year its home is on our northfacing enclosed porch.

Interesting plant. I have a "cottage garden" look, so I don't have tropicals, they'd look a bit out of place.
 
Our soil is very alkaline generally, I avoid lime, LOL. We are always adding manure to the fruit beds to try and raise the acid, and I can't seem to get roses to grow.
 
The Clematis is Nelly Moser, the common one. I'm planning on getting some more after our new porch is done, no space left to grow them up right now. I've never pruned it as such. It always grows up from the base and I just trim away the dead stuff from the previous year. I supoose that's the same thing in a way as cutting it back hard, which is what all the books say.

I couldn't get the "basics" page to download. What my gardening books say is to cut hard back in February or March. I just can't bring myself to do this, as there is no fresh growth until much later, i.e. now. I now have shoots coming up from the base about 3" high, and small 1" shoots off last year's growth in places, up to a height of about 3 feet. To me it's NOW safe to trim off the dead stuff above this. I've been told my many old hands that pruning clematis isn't strictly necessary. The one I had in Toronto was never pruned and it was the talk of the street. The ones I had in England were never pruned and they went to the roof. So I've never changed my ways:)

I've had a dinky urban garden, and it has it's own joys and challenges. The
challenge here, other than the brutal winter temperatures, is one of sheer
scale. My front lawn is an acre. Try putting a border round that! We try to
keep the front NOT looking like a farm, and I am also daft enough to try and
make the smelly bits "pretty" which is why I grow so many annual climbers,
to put up fences and sheds. In the city I bought three dwarf conifers, about
a foot high each, the biggest trees I had space for in the front. We moved
them here, and two have since been mown...........when I suggested a rock
garden the problem was where. We chose the bank that runs alongside the
front drive. The last rock garden I built was in England. It was 6 x 4 and
got a lot of compliments. I was very proud of it. Now I'm faced with a rock
garden 50 feet long, 6 feet deep. It suddenly makes sense to everyone why I
grow so much from seed. I'm just not rich enough to garden this space with
purchased plants. But I can't stand vast expanses of lawn. And then there's
the veggie gardens. I buy pea, bean and corn seed half a pound at a time.
The peas are in, need to wait until the end of the month for beans and corn.
But I've filled one plot with lettuces, oinions, kohl rabi, spinach,
radishes and the peas. Now I face the battle between me and the weeds. If I
spend 4 hours a day 7 days a week weeding, I stay ahead of them. Oddly
enough, I LIKE weeding. Today I started the last of the indoor seeds.
Morning Glories, Lavatera, Sweet Peas, Nasturtiums, and Mirabilis. After
this all seeds will be sown directly outside. But not just yet, the risk of
frosts still looms.

But I do that too, around the perimeter. It's pretty, but it's no FUN. You
see the work is FUN. This is not masochism, even though it sounds like it:)
It's a creative process, rather like painting a picture...only it's in 3D,
it grows, and instead of using brushes and paint, you use plants, rocks etc.
First you fall in love with a given selection of plants for various reasons.
Then you seek to aquire them, one way or another. Then you arrange them in a
pleasing manner. And then you potter. Pottering isn't as strenuous as all
the digging and other preparation. But it does involve being outdoors, with
all the sights, smells, and sounds. A bit of weeding here, deadheading
there, tying up there.....a constant striving for perfection on the garden
canvas, while all the time (in my case) trying to make it look as effortless
as possible, as if it just happened by itself. And the colours......OH! the
colours. Not just the flowers but the friends that come to visit them, the
butterflies, hummingbirds and bright green beetles. The bees and the
spiders. The heavenly scent of the Matthiola and Lavender. Then ending the
day with dinner picked fresh from the veggie patch, and a glass of dandelion
wine, courtesy of my rather "natural" lawn. Just don't look at my
fingernails.

Matt is much the same way :) - as he says, i'm finance & design, he's manual
labor..........

well with moving plants this weekend, plus having new ones to put in.......
and having 3 different varieties of Lilies: Daylilies, Nile Lilies and Inca
Lilies........... conversations got interesting quickly........... by the
end of sunday, it was down right hilarious, a by-stander would've loved the
conversation:

Matt: where do you want the dead lilies?
Me: dead lilies? what lily died?
Matt: those dead lilies out front........
Me: DEAD?? i don't have any dead lilies........
Matt: yes you do, out front...........

he meant the INCA Lilies............. <crosses eye> the plants were
alive....... he just couldn't remember more than they were named after dead
people......... (his explanation)

the great thing about gardening, is its whatever makes the individual
happy.......... its a very flexible medium :)

we have a neighbor who is a widow & a RN, she has very little time.........
but she's certainly creative......... when the butter cups popped up........
she mowed around them, now she has 3 lil buttercup beds......... very little
effort on her part........ but very creative :)

Classic:) Martin can never remember latin names of his favourite plants (the
only ones he gives names to), but being who he is, rather than admit this
and call them "pink round things" he'll attempt the latin name to the best
of his recollection, taking into account his dyslexia when reading. I
usually know what he means. Armeria became Amorous, Lavatera became
Lavatoria, and
Nigella became Niagara. I think it's Freudian.

Put one of those electric fences around your plants, as soon as the animals
learn it's electric, you don't need the electricity anymore, they remember.

we don't prune the saucer size cobalt blue blossomed one that grows among the climbing roses on the end of the house.  too much trouble to figure out which branch is clematis and which is rose bush

mel newsprint held down with wet straw will really cut down on the weeding.
and it is biodegradable as long as you dont use the color or glossy pages

Actually Ishi, around the main vegetable garden I have a five foot high wire
mesh fence and a heavy gate....but the strawberries were in the herb garden,
and as that's partly decorative I can't start putting electric fencing round
it:) What we're doing today is rounding up our feathered friends and

the perimiter fence that we put up last year, and this means going to the
city to buy the wire, so I'll be away all day, as if we're going that far we
may as well do other shopping.

BTW obviously you never had Araucanas. They fly right over fences, even my
five foot wire mesh.

Hiya Melanie -

My Mom started out just recycling newspapers that way, saved em up all
winter. Then she got smart and got unprinted rolls of it from the local
newspaper. The rolls are a lot easier to work with than individual sheets.

Check out wherever your nearest newspaper is printed, or even a regular
commercial printer. A lot of times they discard the end of a roll when
whatever's leftover after printing isn't worth leaving on the press for the
next run.

Besides being a decent weed preventer, newsprint has the added benefit of
being white, so critters don't want to walk on it because they're too
exposed to predators.

Now black ink used to print other items could well still be toxic

It has been repetitious and I'm sorry, I was also to blame. I found my reply
seemed to recur, it seemed necessary at the time. Obviously the "not
listening" phenomenon must go both ways or I wouldn't have to. Almost got
dragged into an argument about arguing too....realized just in time (sorry,
should have clued in faster and not responded earlier) but I've now ignored
several posts on this tack. Some pretty low stuff when I came here today, I
let them all go. Some I couldn't dignify with a response, others would
simply have been more repetition. I don't have time for argument traps,
mindgames, "needy" emotional stuff or attempted guilt trips. Or splitting
hairs semantics.

I was told the Ameraucanas tend to be heartier but also tend to all be white.  And was warned off the "Easter egg chickens" which are crosses between the Araucanas and commercial chickens.

I've given up trying to sell the eggs. We hatch a few to sell chicks at
shows, as a novelty chicken, but I wouldn't want a flock...4 are enough for
my purposes. The eggs are too small to be used in recipes without messing up
proportions, although they are mostly yolk. Mostly we like them for their
personalities, quite unlike any other chicken. They are a different species
apparently.

I have noticed their blown eggs showing up for $1 to $2 each in the malls
for placing in antique egg baskets in kitchen displays. They do sell as do
the speckled browns.
