There was one with a similar ending that I saw in an old Laurel and
Hardy short where the boys wound up in the wrong house and mistakenly
went to sleep in bed with a woman in it. Her husband appears at the
door with a murderous look on his face. He advances forward with a
huge axe as Ollie and Stan get out of the bed and begin tor race round
and round it with the axe wielder right behind them as the screen goes
dark and all we hear is Ollie and Stan going "Whoooo, whoooooo,
whooooooooo" with a few screams tossed in. They way the screen went
black was similar to the Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd food episode. I also
liked the one on Seinfeld when Newman's mail truck burst into flames
and he started screaming and the film stopped and went to just a
single unmoving frame of Newman's howling face with his screams dubbed
in. I like those kinds of things, where the sound goes on but the
visual is stopped. It's like when you're dead and you don't move, but
deep inside your head you're screaming - so when they show your
unmoving face in that confined space all we hear is loud screaming
coming from your motionless lips. I like that, it's almost always
funny.
