Garages use 'stingers' to combat petrol theft
By Lucy Cockcroft
Last Updated: 12:58AM BST 22/05/2008

A sharp rise in the theft of fuel at the pumps has led some garage owners
to install "stinger" devices to puncture the tyres of drivers who leave the
forecourt without paying.

The increase in "drive-aways", as they are known in the industry, has been
linked to the 20 per cent increase in the cost of petrol in the past year.

The new Drivestop device has a sensor which detects when a driver is
pulling away without paying. The cashier triggers the system which starts
with a loudspeaker announcement warning the would-be thief that his tyres
will be shredded.

If the warning is ignored a set of metal spikes spring up and punctures the
rear wheels, deflating them in ten seconds.

The Drivestop, which costs £10,000, also leaves a tag with a unique
identification number embedded in the rubber, which enables police to link
the vehicle with the theft.

I like the tire puncture method better. Give those savage crooks what
they deserve. Punishment.

Because we don't. Europe as a whole doesn't.

Back in the days of sub $1 gas, no pre-pay, and no mid-grade gas, I
often purchased gas at a gas station which was designed to prevent
drive-offs. The station was set up for one way traffic. Tire poppers
prevented leaving via the entrance, and the payment collection booth
controlled a gate at the exit. But I came up with a scam that
sometimes resulted in free gas.

I would typically pump $4 of Ethyl (the old name for premium) and then
$4 or $5 of Regular. I would tell the attendant my pump number and
offer a $10 for my $8 or $9 (total) purchase. Sometimes the change I
was given was correct, other times it was $5 too high (I was only
being charged for the 2nd half of my purchase). I stuffed the change
into my shirt pocket without examining it - I was always given the
correct number of bills in change (1 for a $9 purchase, 2 for an $8
purchase), so I could always claim not to have noticed that one of the
bills I was given was a $5 instead of a $1.

Let's see........Prepay's cost is zero and the puncture method is about
$20,000.00 American.
Which would I want if I owned a gas station ?

Stinger MISSILES you mean.

Yes, they all deserve that.

All politicians are SHIT. Every damn single one of them. A bunch of worthless
idiots.

Roll on TRUE democracy instead of one dominated by behinds-the-scene pressure
groups.

ANOTHER perosn who doesn't know what he is talking about.
The only person cheated is the poor guy who runs the gas station.
You cheated him out of $5.00 and he had to pump 500 gallons of gas to make
up for your thieft.

Dumbass Davey, the oil companies already got their money when the
station own filled up his underground tanks. The station owner was
ripped off... not that there's any difference in the justification
of stealing.

Theft is theft, whether it is $5 or $5million. If you are going to
sell your soul, your personal integrity, you should sell if for a few
million, not just $5.

BTW: You might have cost the min-wage clerk his or her job.

Not a good idea. In the states, the station could be sued and lose the
argument.
Then, the attendant would have to know which one of 20 cars it was to
begin with. So you have 3 cars leaving at the same time and all 3 sets
of tires are damaged. End of a good thing for sure.

What do you mean I didn't pay? Here's the damn receipt you just gave
me! Now guess who's gonna pay for the tires and the tow truck. You
are, fuckhead.

The direction this thread has taken is interesting. It started out
as a story of what a proprietor did to protect his personal business
against thieves.

Now it is a list of rationalizations people tell themselves to help
them cope with the fact that they have no moral character.

I did most of the time as it made the stop quicker.
Of course, where I was known there was no problem if I did a fill.
Funny thing, in the nearest place, the wheels in the window kept
spinning in a slow-down after I shut off!
He never failed to pass me on the MOT, though, so maybe that was the
trade-off!

I don't steal gas. But to have someone threaten to slash my tires
(which is what a tire popper does) is an aggressive, unwarranted act
which makes me lose all sympathy for the person doing the
threatening. If you are going to treat your customers like thieves,
don't be surprised if some of them fail to disappoint.

Reminds me of a legendary gas station out on the great American highway,
back before the time that I had a license, where all the local teenage
hot-rodders used to pull up at night and fill up their tanks once the
overnight attendant fell asleep. Funniest thing was the gas station was
called ALERT.
