Well, as Loaf pointed out in his follow-up posts, police in
Alberta get paid, on average, quite a bit more than $40K per
year.

So it's not impossible that he could afford a nice car like
a BMW.  Especially if he has a wife who also has a good
income and they split the mortgage payments and other bills.
