It is with great pain we must take to task one of our traditionally
pro-gun sheriffs.
Sheriff B. J. Barnes of Guilford County is including a most puzzling
disqualifying feature for pistol purchase permit requests coming
through his office. It seems that the purchase permit application he
uses stipulates that people with pending TRAFFIC cases and suspended
driver's licenses are not eligible for permits. Knowing Sheriff
Barnes' usual pro-gun stance, GRNC attempted to contact him to find
out if this was simply something slipped in by the legal department
that he was unaware of; or to at least allow him the opportunity to
try to justify this position. Sheriff Barnes, however; has not seen
fit to answer our queries.
It is certainly worth noting also that had GRNC not managed to defeat
HB 1287, such a denial would result in your inclusion in an SBI
database. Perhaps Sheriff Barnes needs a reminder that he rode into
office on the position of being a friend to gun owners and with more
than a little support from GRNC.

Dear Sheriff Barnes:
As a man who campaigned for your office as a supporter of the Second
Amendment, you certainly are not behaving like one. Denying pistol
purchase permits to people based on traffic infractions is neither
required by state or federal law, nor can it be in any way construed
as other than anti-gun.
I urge you to rethink this poorly thought out position. Remember, the
gun owners of Guilford County played a large role in putting you into
office. If you desert them, there will be a price to be paid at the
polls on Election Day.
