GRNC Alert 11-05-08:
THE BAD NEWS
So. Here we are. Welcome to the post-election hangover.
In short, GRNC threw everything we had at the election. I am proud of
the work and achievements - and yes, there were many achievements -
made by our many volunteers. GRNC did more mailings and radio spots
than ever before and, for the first time, added automated calling to
its arsenal.
But the fact is that gun rights did not drive this election. Barrack
Obama brought an unprecedented number of minorities to the polls who,
to a greater extent than Republicans, cast straight party votes for
Democrats. People who watched their 401k's tank voted for unspecified
"change." And frankly, the Republican Party is a burned out hulk of
what Ronald Reagan initiated in 1980.
Even some gun voters shifted to Obama, either out of self-delusion
("Obama won't take my guns," said one); or out of principle, either
because they felt other issues were more important, or because the
RINOs of the Republican Party couldn't manage to field a candidate
better than McCain.
In US House races, Democrats picked up 17 seats nationwide including,
unfortunately, the one held by Robin Hayes (R-8, GRNC ****
evaluation). In the US Senate, Elizabeth Dole (R, ****) and 4 other
Republicans lost seats nationwide, leaving Democrats shy of the
60-vote "supermajority" necessary to overcome filibusters. (At the
time of writing, Sen. Norm Coleman, R-MN, leads Al Franken by a narrow
margin likely to lead to a recount).
THE SO-SO NEWS
In General Assembly races, things remain largely unchanged. In the NC
Senate, Republican former House Representative Deb Clary (R-Cleveland,
****) picked up a Democrat seat previously held by our new Lt.
Governor, Walter Dalton, bringing the D/R split in the Senate from
31/19 to 30/20.
In the NC House, Democrats picked up two previously Republican seats
while Republicans picked up two previously Democrat seats, leaving the
split at 68/52. Mark Hollo (R-Catawba/Alexander, ****), who was
supported by the GRNC Political Victory Fund in mailings and radio
spots, will likely call for a recount in a race he trails by only 209
of 31,000 votes cast, leaving us a chance of picking up a House seat.
We will keep you apprised of developments.
THE GOOD NEWS
As in 1992, conservative organizations in general and gun rights
groups in particular will grow stronger. It seems that some people do
nothing until appropriately threatened. Judging by online GRNC
memberships that started rolling in as the election returns came in,
some apparently feel very threatened.
Perhaps Pelosi, Reid and Obama will be over-confident enough to drive
Congress back to conservatives, as in 1994. Perhaps not. Whatever the
case, GRNC will be ready: We are more organized, more efficient and
more effective than ever before.
WHAT YOU MUST DO
* JOIN GRNC: If you aren't a member already, join. Frankly, we will
need your money to fight inevitable gun control. You can do so at:
http://grnc.org/join_grnc/
* VOLUNTEER: We will also need your time. Whether it be helping to
distribute legislative alerts at gun shows, helping the Legislative
Action Team stalk the halls of the General Assembly, or putting your
unique talents to use in other ways, GRNC needs you now.
* SIGN UP MEMBERS: You all know people at gun clubs, the local range
or hanging around gun shops who "aren't joiners." March them to a
computer terminal and sign them up via www.GRNC.org or have them fill
out a membership application and mail it for them. We need numbers,
and we need them fast.
* RESPOND TO GRNC ALERTS: As the inevitable gun legislation is
introduced, we will target specific legislators and committees. We
need YOU to deluge their offices with phone calls and e-mails.
As exemplified by our mascot "Max," GRNC never gives up, never
forgets, and never goes away. With your help, when Congress and the
General Assembly reconvene, we will come out swinging.
