I have always had an interest in lasers but I always find myself
asking the question.."What will I do with it?" ringing hollow.

What do you use your lasers for?

I just play with them from time to time. I used to put together crude
beam effects and bring them to parties, but that kinda faded out with my
20s.

I used one with some scanners (galvanometers) so I could work out how to draw
rotating graphics frames and polygons but writing code for GPS display took
over, the hardware is cheaper and the results probably more useful.

I keep diodes around because eventually I'll need them again to test driver
designs. And I keep a green DPSS around because I like it at times, just
seeing that kind of light in a fine line is cool. It's needle thin at
aperture and not much wider than a pencil at 10 metres. Sometimes it helps me
to view things not easily viewed in other ways so it gets used about as often
as many other important but not always used tools I have. I like strong red
lasers best.

My first interest was just 'cause they're "cool".

Next was laser shows, but realized it's not an easy business to
get into.

Mostly back to the "cool" factor now.

I have some ideas in mind for devices to build that use lasers,
but time is a precious commodity.

I'd also someday like to build something from scratch. Someday.

I have had a fascination with lasers since reading about them in
elementary school, and seeing a picture of a ruby laser with the flash
tube coiled around it. However, I was always cautious to keep my
spending on it to a minimum, since I didn't have a practical
application.

I did use a small He-Ne to create a fairy in a theatrical production.
It was like what has been done for Tinker-bell.

More recently, at our church fall carnival, I set up a room with
lasers aimed around it, to simulate a Mission Impossible type of alarm
system. The idea being to get through the alarm system to get a piece
of candy without setting it off.

Actually, last year I didn't have an audible alarm working, and want
to this year. If I can get a cheap kit or pre-built circuit, I would
prefer this over starting to build a circuit from scratch. Any
suggestions?

Holography :-)

I just love holograms. Every one I make is like the first one I ever made
and is just as fascinating.

Also laser beam shows.

have been blurred :)

Most of the lasers are use in DVD/VCD system.
a lot of the lasers are used in biomedical research and
telecommunication
you may visit the site http://www.crystalaser.com
provide the information for compact lasers with the most laser
wavelength selection available
