Friends, Adaab

I am sure that most ALUPers are aware of Kaifi Sahib's contribution to Urdu
poetry. Yes, he contributed many memorable film songs in addition to making
a respectable place for himself in Urdu literature. He was and remained
progressive, working for people and their welfare. He believed in communal
harmony.

In an interview (recorded many years back) aired recently by the BBC Urdu
service, Kaifi Saheb said, "I was born in a slave India, grew up in an
independent India and would like to die in a socialist India." Alas, India
seems to have gone back to slavery in the recent past. This time the
'masters' are not Britishers or foreigners, but they are a group of
misguided, hate-monger Indians--my neighbors and your neighbors--who have
decided to smash peace into pieces. These self-proclaimed protectors of
religion are using Hitler-doctrine to propagate communal divide and trying
to justify genocide. Lamenting on the current situation in India, Shabana
Azmi said that her father had been very disturbed in the recent past. But,
he remained hopeful for a better tomorrow, Shabana said.

I am posting a nazm (poem) written by Kaifi Sahib after Babri Masjid episode
about a decade ago.

Regards,

Zafar Iqbal

DOOSRA BANWAAS

Ram banwaas se jab laut ke ghar mein aaye,
Yaad jangal bahut aaya jo nagar mein aaye,
Raqsse deewangee aangan mein jo dekha hoga,
6 december ko Shri Ram ne socha hoga,
Itne deewane kahan se mere ghar mein aaye?
Jagmagate thhe jahan Ram key qadmon ke nishaan,
Piyaar kee kahkashan leti thi angdayee jahan,
Mod nafrat ke usee rah guzar mein aaye,
Dharam kya unka hae, kya zaat hae, yeh janta kaun?
Ghar na jalta tau unhe raat mein pehchanta kaun,
Ghar jalane ko mera, log jo ghar mein aaye,
Shakahari hae mere dost tumahara khanjar.
Tumne Babar kee taraf pheke thhe saare patthar
Hae mere sar ki khata zakhm jo sar mein aaye,
Paun Sarjoo mein aabhi Ram ne dhoye bhee na thhe
Ke nazar aaye wahan khoon ke gehre dhabbe,
Paun dhoye bina Sarjoo ke kinare se uthe,
Ram yeh kehte hue aapne dwaare se uthe,
Rajdhani kee fiza aayee nahin raas mujhe,
6 December ko mila doosra banwaas mujhe.

Dr. Sb, aadaab!

I don't know if you have been a regular in this forum. But since I am
seeing you for the first time, let me welcome you here!

Thanks for posting the nazm. I had heard about it, but never got the
chance to read it. As expected, it turned out to be typical Kaifi Azmi
stuff - articulate and well drafted.

Please allow me to point out a few things that will make your future
postings look much better. There are a few transliterations errors and
inconsistencies, which you may correct. Besides, this is a nazm and as
such should be written in aparticular format, which separates the
stanzas from each other. There should be a gap after the second line,
fifth line and so on.

Thanks once again.

Sincerely,
Irfan :Abid:
