Aek aur ghazal --- by Makhmoor Dehlavi

teen maheene ki sar-gardaani ke b'aad, vaapas ghar laut aaya hoon.
chaukhat paar karte hi yeh (aamiaana sa) she'r zehn mein aaya:
jaan bachi to laakhoN paaye
laut ke budhdhoo ghar ko aaye!
jab ALUP par nazar daali to kuchh veeraani si dikhaai di. main ne socha
ke is soorat-e-haal mein to jald-az-jald koi na koi cheez ALUP ko bhejni
hi chaahiye. idhar-udhar dekha to "Baada-e-Makhmoor" ki jild nazar
aayee. saf'hon ko ulat-pulat kiya to aek khoobsoorat si ghazal
dil-o-dimaagh ko jach si gayee ..... aur ab wuhi ghazal aap sab ki
dil-joi ke liye haazir-e-khidmat hai.

1. muhabbat mein shab-e-taareek-e-hijraaN kaun dekhe ga?
hameen dekhen ge, yeh khwaab-e-pareeshaaN kaun dekhe ga?
2. in aankhon se tajalli ko darakhshaaN kaun dekhe ga?
uthaa bhi do niqaab-e-roo-e-taabaaN! kaun dekhe ga? ***
3. yihi ik raat hai bas kaa'inaat-e-zindagi apni
sahar hoti hui, ai shaam-e-hijraaN!, kaun dekhe ga? ***
4. kuchh aisa ho, dam-e-aakhir na aayeN woh ayaadat ko
unhen apne kiye par yoon pashemaaN kaun dekhe ga? *****
5. mujhee par aaye ga ilzaam meri paa'imaali ka
tiri raftaar ko, ai fitna-saamaaN!, kaun dekhe ga? ***
6. nafas ke saath hi qaid-e-ta'alluq toot jaati hai!
palat kar phir soo-e-gor-e-gharibaaN kaun dekhe ga? *****
7. chalo Makhmoor! tanhaai mein shaghl-e-maikashi hoga
chhupaa kar le chalo peene ka saamaaN, kaun dekhe ga?

I am delighted to see you back in your rightful place: ALUP! I'll be
back in a while, but before leaving, I just had to say that this is
indeed a happy occasion for me. Let me speak on behalf of all your well
wishers, saving a little clutter.
When I return this weekend, I will resume my self-appointed role as
poster of error-filled messages. Hopefully your responses, and those of
all the other wise people, will prove to be of some value to ALUP
readers.
I intend to post all the verses of "Hawas-e-manzil-e-Laila na tujhe hai
na mujhe". I have listened to the tape carefully, and will write down
the words as I hear them.
I am curious about this ghazal. I have been through Faiz's major
collections (including Naqsh-e-faryaadi, Zindaan Naama and Dast-e-saba)
and not found this ghazal. Yet it is on a casette devoted entirely to
Faiz's poetry . It is sung beautifully by Mehdi Hassan.

This ghazal is a verse translation of Iqbal's Persian ghazal,
havas-E manzil-e lEilA na to dArI-o na man.
tAb-e sargarmi-e sehrA na to dArI-o na man.
which is why it does not appear in Faiz' collection. He did not consider
it his own poem. I believe Faiz translated this, and another ghazal by
Iqbal, on commission from the Government of Pakistan during Iqbal's
centenary celebrations in 1977. The other ghazal was:
is tarah qissA mirA har KHAr par vA kar diyA.
bhEj kar daSHt-E junUN meN mujh ko rusvA kar diyA.
Iqbal's original ghazal began:
ASHnA har KHAr rA az qissei-E mA sAKHtI.
dar biyAbAn-E junun bordI-o rusvA sAKHtI.
I'm writing from memory, so apologies for any errors.
IMHO, the translations are quite marginal --- not Faiz' finest hour. I
do agree that Mehdi Hasan has sung `havas-E manzil-e laElA' very well.
