I am categorising surnames and believe to have found a Spanish surname: Del
Rey.

I do not understand whether the surname: Del Rey should be filed under D or
R for alphabetical order.

As far as I can say, both the D and R are written as uppercase, whilst the
rest lowercase:

Lana Del Rey

I have researched as much as possible, but can't seem to find an
explanation.

Please could anybody with the understanding, post a simple explanation.
(If it makes any difference, I am writing in English)

Many Thanks.
Andy

I can only reply from personal experience. I don't know if everyone does it
the same way in all countries.

In the school I used to work in the "de" + something and "del" + something
surnames were always filed under "D". In a name such as Alfredo del Rey
González, a name which shows one first name and the traditional two surnames
found in most Spanish-speaking countries, the first surname is considered to
be "del Rey" and the second one "González". The extra factor that you have to
deal with is the capitalisation of "Del". It's never capitalized here. Hope
this helps.
