An interesting feature of the latter, is that the text is followed by
a Latin-to-German glossary, but in the most recent edition (March
2002), this has been supplemented by equivalents in English. (If you
ever wanted to know the Latin for "waste incineration plant", that's
where to find out!) Also, the weather section at the end is enlivened
by a quotation from Carmina Burana. Despite a smattering of world news
stories, the main emphasis seems to be on German home news.
Both sites have RealPlayer audio files. The Bremen newscaster reads
more slowly and deliberately than his Finnish counterparts, with
characteristically Teutonic clarity of diction, and a Teutonic accent
to go with it!
Some web audio files are rigged to prevent downloading, and
unfortunately that seems to be the case here. In order to have the
recordings for offline listening, I've had to resort to the clumsy
expedient of recording the live stream on a cassette recorder
connected to the PC speakers' headphone socket. I cannot bring myself
to believe that there is not some better way of capturing an audio
stream. Does anyone know?

Thanks Hartmut.
I've also been informed of a program called "Streambox VCR" which
works by ignoring the secret "copy switch" which determines whether a
streaming media file is downloadable or not. Unfortunately it was
strangled at the beta stage by a lawsuit, the judgement of which at:
http://www.law.uh.edu/faculty/cjoyce/copyright/release10/Real.html
gives some fascinating insights.
The program remains available, however, and is easily tracked down
with Google, for instance to:
http://home-1.tiscali.nl/~staak/vcr.htm
though getting it to work is several degrees less than
straightforward. Nevertheless, I have succeeded in downloading audios
from both Nuntii Latini sites.
But CAUTION: Remember this is beta software with no technical support.
Johannes.
