I work in Queensland Australia where the profession still has a low
profile. Some friends and I (also Landscape Archs) were wondering if the
same problems exist over there, or if Australia is just a crappy place to
work.

This discussion started after an article in the institute's newsletter "is
Landscape Architecture sexy". The discussion goes something like this:-
You're at a party and chatting someone up.
Stranger at a party – " what do you do for a living"
Myself - "I'm a Landscape Architect"
Stranger at party – "Oh, your a gardener that's nice, I must get another
drink"

Is this (a) a universal reaction. (b) My personality. (c) What you would
expect in Queensland Australia.
All comments welcome but keep them clean I'm using someone else's computer.

Cheers
Chris from Australia

It's just you, of course. You're over-sensitive. (grin)

Have you by any chance run into James Sinatra down under there? I had him
for my first planting design class at Iowa State University, and the last I
heard went to teach at the University of Melbourne.

Most of the poeple that I know need a bit of education about the profession.
I usually explain that "I prepare landscape plans" or "I prepare site
plans".

Most persons in the US don't have a clue what a landscape architect is or
does, and only by focusing on function rather than title am I truly
communicating with them. On the other hand, most engineers, land
developers, and architects do understand...and don't require the same level
of "hand-holding" or education.

In my opinion:-
A good Architect has the noble profession of gardener at his or her core. I
often tell people that I am a gardener and some times I wish I was one. The
good gardeners that I happen to meet in the course of my professional work
certainly get my respect.
