I recently purchased a newly constructed home which needs to be landscaped.
I am looking for a landscape architect who can draw up a set of plans that I
can work from. The total lot is about 8500 square feet so this isn't a
tremendously large project. I am planning to do most of the construction
myself and will sub-contract parts of the project that I can't handle.
Can any of you offer advice on locating an appropriate architect for this
size/type of project.
Thank you

You can contact your local chapter of the ASLA for referrals, but that will not
give you much of an sense of the type/quality of work the referred parties will
produce. Personally, I would feel more comfortable with getting a referral from
someone who has had similar work done - you can get first hand information and
very likely see the results for yourself. Any friends or neighbors who have had
landscaping done recently who could provide names?
Depending on what you are looking for, you may not require the services of a
licensed Landscape Architect. If there are no drainage issues, grading or
elaborate hardscapes contemplated, a landscape designer may be an alternate
suggestion. They will be able to design a landscaping plan and suggest suitable
plantings. Many work in association with area nurseries or contact APLD
(Association of Professional Landscape Designers) at www.apld.com. Many better
nurseries also offer landscape design services, too.
Whomever you select, be sure to confirm credentials and ask for referrals of
their work.
