The printer cartridge is a great ideal. Especially if its for a color printer
since the ink runs out so soon. Also since he's a writer how about the basic
things. Paper, pens, pencils. Another good idea would be a book called the
Writer's Market. It lists all the markets that accept writer's submissions.
Hope some of this helps

Paper? Pens? Pencils? Whatever for? Last year I tried to give away an
electric typewriter, and couldn't find anyone who wanted one. "What's a
typewriter?" one writer friend asked.
OTOH, "Writer's Market" is a good suggestion.

This book is absolute rubbish. Has anyone ever sold anything to any of the
publications listed therein? All you'll do is waste time and money.

I have sold several things (including a book) by using Writer's Market.

Check out the Levenger's catalog at
http://www.levengers.com
I gave inexpensive gifts from Levengers to editors at my best accounts this
year, in lieu of the usual boxes of Godiva, and got rave responses. It's a cant
miss. (And If anybody gives me a printer cartridge they can forget about
getting anything from me. Sheesh.)

Wrongo, friend. I have sold several articles to publications listed in WM,
as well as establishing relationships by referrals.
If I may be presumptuous, you must know how to query to be successful with a
"cold" contact, and the information in WM was extremely useful in knowing
what they wanted.

My browser doesn't seem to want to go to this URL. Any ideas?

I'll believe it when I see it. The only thing I can say is that from
personal experience both Writers Markets and the Writers And Artists Yearbook
(the UK equivalent) are a waste of time and money.

From the tone of your reply to two people who have benefited from Writer's
Market, I must assume you are a disgruntled "wannabe" whose work was not
immediately snapped up -- and therefore the book is "a waste of time and
money."
Perhaps more time honing your skill as a writer and less time on the
newsgroups is the solution.

My bad. It's:

Writer's Market isn't rubbish at all. I've definitely sold stuff with its help.
But it's not the end-all and I don't use it any more. Nowadays I prefer Bacon's
Publicity Checker because it has far more (US and Canadian) magazines. With
Writer's Market I feel I'm missing a lot of possible outlets, and also that I'm
doing the same thing a lot of other writers do, which is something I try to
avoid.

And where can one obtain the Bacon;s Publicity Checker? Do you know of a web
site that carries it?

You assume wrong; although I haven't written for any magazines for some
time I have in the past written for Investors' Chronicle, Model Journal
and Index On Censorship - among others.
Earlier this year I wrote three articles for Common Sense - the journal
of the Islamic Party of Britain. This followed my spending six months in
Brixton Prison following a police frame-up. At the trial I conducted my
own defence, which was just as well considering. I have spent a great deal
of the past few years in libel litigation and for various reasons have
become a non-person. That being said, my experience of these two publications
pre-dates this considerably. I can only repeat that these books like most
"self-help" books benefit only their publishers. That is my experience.
Some people will do anything for a story.....
Since I would imagine very few of read the usual islamic publications, why
don't you post your articles or edited versions here. I have an undying
curiosity about prison life both here and abroad.
