Gifts for young writer?

Hey ya'll,

My youngest daughter, Gypsie Leigh, is going to turn 7 at the end of
January. She has already written a very short children's story (with
pictures she drew) and wrote a 'poem' to Grandma. Her love of reading seems
unmatched by other children her age.
I would like to find some gifts (other than a computer) to help, possibly
gently guide,her in her writing.
Do any of you, or your acquaintances, have any ideas?

I greatly appreciate any ideas in this.

The very best guidance for all new writers, whatever their age, comes
from reading as much good writing as is physically possible. Good books
and magazine subscriptions are a gift beyond price.

My father has given me an annual sub to National Geographic every year
for the past 12 years, bless him.

With a name like Gypsie, she has to become a writer!

This may not be what you're looking for, but my sister gave me some of Charles
Dickens' novels when I was very young, and she would read them to me as well.
It had an indelible impact on my life and my choice to write fiction and film.

There are two books I know of, one by Dr. Suess and one that I think
is by Judy Bloom -- ask at a bookstore -- that are basically books
that have you fill in a bunch of info about yourself -- "books about
me" -- there's also a version for older kids, around middle school.
These can be great for getting kids to be more creative. I think blank
journals can be good too.

Slightly on topic, I think there are some things you can do for young
kids who want to learn to write. Help them set up their own blog --
see blogspot.com. Help them set up an e-mail account on Hotmail or
something, or teach them how to use newsgroups. Just a lesson in using
Microsoft Word can help.

On the Mac, there are some really cool shareware products -- one by
Circus Ponies software I think -- that is designed to help people do
freewriting and make journal entries and such.

Your ideas are wonderful! Dr. Suess and Judy Blume were always two of my
absolute favorites as I was growing up. National Geographic I have enjoyed
as an adult and didn't think about that for her.
I'll also check into the 'journals' that JB spoke of. As for Charles
Dickens I never had the opportunity to read his work (including today) but I
will look for some of his books.
Ya'll have been very generous with your advice! Thank you so very much.
Any more advice or information will be very much appreciated. :)

Well, if she wants to become a newspaper reporter, you could always
introduce her to the lifestyle early and give her a bottle of scotch... ;-)

My similarly aged daughters, who will naturally grow up to be writers,
like those magnetic poetry doodads.
