Every time I've gone into IRC chat rooms the people are talking like they are on the same level as my 12 year old child. Are their any adults on IRC that have real conversations? All the stupid slang and symbols are enough to drive a person crazy. I want to have normal conversations. Isn't their anyone else that feels the same way? If I see another :) again I swear I'll throw up!

Well, I don't see how :)'s ruin your IRC session, but I guess it's another case of personal preference. I can tell you that unless you learn to live with the smileys, you'd better start considering another hobby... I doubt all the tens thousands of IRCers out there are willing to change their typing habits because you want to toss your cookies. To answer the actual question, though... yeah, there are mature people on IRC, and yes, you can have good, meaningful and intelligent conversations with them. Sadly, finding them can be a bit hard at times, what with all the wanna-be elite dudes who tend to inhabit every major IRC network... but they ARE out there, and usually finding them is well worth the trouble. Keep looking.

I would say, for the most part, this is the truth. The useage of grammar, punctuation, and spelling has declined greatly, maybe for the reason that a lot of people are looking for "shortcuts". But do these shortcuts make up for the seeming lack of intelligence?
This bird has flown, Kathleen...

Read the above, and agree that most people sound like children (and probably are) on many of the IRC groups. Anyone know of any good IRC chat groups they might recommend? Or is there a way to get a list of same?
: I would say, for the most part, this is the truth. The useage of : grammar, punctuation, and spelling has declined greatly,
The "useage"? :)
: reason that a lot of people are looking for "shortcuts". But do these : shortcuts make up for the seeming lack of intelligence?
Not always. IRC differs from real life in that you're limited in how fast you can type; in real life you can talk faster than you can think. "Shortcuts" to a point help to compensate for that. For instance, when I'm going to be away from the keyboard for a couple minutes, I say "brb". It's understood by all my friends to mean "be right back". I'm not trying to be "elite" by abbreviating things, I'm just speeding things up. As for smiles, they help to compensate for another problem you encounter when chatting via text. You can't see the reactions of the person you're talking to. Well-used emoticons can give conversations more realism. And I guess what it comes down to is if you don't like to see them, don't use them.
: (BTW, I am a fourteen year old, told by many that I sound at least in : my late teens, even twenties, when I am on IRC.)
Maturity isn't always based on age. I always try to judge a person by who they really are as opposed to how they spell, or punctuate, etc. That's one of my favorite things about IRC -- it's possible to really do that. -- \\\\ (@ @) []/-------------------------------\[]/----------------ooOo-( )-oOoo-----\[] [] Josh Woodward [] To do is to be. -- Nietzsche [] [] jo...@mail.bgsu.edu [] To be is to do. -- Sartre [] [] http://www.bgsu.edu/~joshw [] Do be do be do. -- Sinatra [] [] UCS Help Center Consultant [] Meow. -- Jenny [] []\-------------------------------/[]\----------------------------------/[]

Talking about being on a 12 year old level, if I see the word "they're" misspelled again I swear I'll throw up, too.

I don't want to nit-pick, but shouldn't "their" above be "there"??? And in the subject box, "their" should be "they're".
As a very new user, it would be nice to speak to more "mature" people occasionally, but the smileys don't worry me - I rather like them ;)

Look for topics that seem mature, also the 30+ 40pluss indicate the age groups that the chanell attracts.. As a side note: I have found that Dalnet and Undernet seem to attract a little more of an adult group.

You don't understand do you. Smileys are not just some cutesie mark like dotting a exclamation mark with a heart. Smileys are generally used to denote sarcasm, something an idiot like you may not be able to comprehend, where it might be taken seriously. The slang is usually not that bad and is mostly limited to the shortening of words and the removal of unimportant words. Sentences on IRC can be figured out very easily unless your a moron.

I only use iRC now and again these days..because of the reasons stated above....Isnt it funny how people , when they are criticised, can't come up with anything else except 'stop whining'. Why not admit it???..A lot of IRC IS conducted on a 12 year old child level...thats not whining..thats stating a truth...if you are into that then fair enough..but a lot are not...ah..what the hell..noone will listen, they just hurl abuse.... channel #cricket is normally civilised..altho you may find yourself getting bored at the conversations if you dont like cricket!;)). specialist channels I find ARE somewhat more civilised altho they to have their share of children. ;)) Mike.

The problem could be that these "12 year olds" get to hide behind the anonymity of a "nick" (much like I'm doing..geez I love hypocrisy) and think that gives them free reign to a)act like a "gangsta" b) act like god's gift to the opposite sex c) act LIKE the opposite sex d) generally be annoying in any and every way possible e) stand up on a pulpit and preach to those unfortunate enough to know the /ignore command or f) type in long lists using a) b) etc. As for the complaints I read about spelling and grammar.. I'm an english teacher and on irc I throw grammar out the window because the POINT of IRC is NOT grammar, punctuation, and spelling, it is to communicate (or to a) act like a gangsta, etc) and besides, either someone keeps moving my keys around or I'm going dyslexic, but I keep making typos and I'd like to be able to reply to someone before they fall alseep (or get split which is more likely). Anyone that would be so petty as to correct my spelling or grammar on irc needs to get a life (and believe me, if I am in a position to tell you to get a life you REALLY need one). There is a possible explanation.. the solution? There is none, unless you start your own channel and kick/ban everyone that annoys you. Then you can sit in your channel (all by yourself likely)and be safe from them. But what do you do about these same people when you meet them in real life? Well I would (if I had a real life) just learn to ignore them. Or /ignore them. There are wonderful people on IRC and it is worth dealing with the lamers to talk to them. Don't give up. Keep looking.

Normal people talk to each other face to face. ALso many normal people talk to each other on irc. However lots of people who are incapable of adult interaction hide from the world by using irc.
The thing with irc is that it provides a hiding place for people who cannot deal with other people. It provides a dream world where anyone you talk to is exactly how you want them to be, because after 4lines of text you automatically draw up an image of what someone islike. Then what ever they say, it can be interpretted to suit the needs of the listener. The number of people Ive observed falling in and out of love in the space of 500 typed words is mind boggling.
In short, irc is great for screwed up teenagers, The stupid slang and irritating asci smileys provide them with an identity. The more behaviours they can display that identify them as irc users, then the more part of a group they feel.
There are some viable adults on irc, I some of my friends today, I met through irc, however I would reccomend avoiding meeting irc people, as it seems many are really hard work, extremnely dull and incapable of even basic conversation.
As irc has grown enromously in the last coupe of years, I'm sure there are more normal people out there, but I imagine they keep quiet amongst the squabbling children and their *superdupersnugglehugs*

And then there are those who think they are the channel "sponsors" by (subtely saying) "And now a word from our sponsor" by advertising some Web site or another channel that *THEY* think is "cool".
Not everyone thinks the same way OR has the same likes and dislikes. We all have our own tastes.
