Here we have a minor little glitch in Google's
algorithm which shows that searches are actually
case sensitive. A true case insensitive algorithm
would convert Guy Macon, guy macon and GUY MACON
into guy macon before doing any further processing.
They are doing something with case that they
thought would never make a difference in the
results we see. Trying to figure out an algorithm
through black box testing is a lot like trying to
crack a cipher through cryptanalysis; even a small
amount of leaked information helps.
Google's claim:
"Google searches are NOT case sensitive. All letters,
regardless of how you type them, will be understood
as lower case. For example, searches for george
washington, George Washington, and gEoRgE wAsHiNgToN
will all return the same results."

Google returns the exact same 956 results in both cases, and clicking on
"repeat the search with the omitted results included" makes the number
for both search terms the same (586,000,000).
I repeated the test with 72.14.205.147 and got
581,000,000 for "Guy OR macon".
579,000,000 for "guy OR macon"
I would like to ask others to here to verify this on their local
Google datacenters. Use ping or tracert to find out what IP
address google.com is at for you, then insert that IP address
in the URLs above and report the results. Thanks!

I get a similar variation here in the UK
(though 216.239.59.104 is NY)
I think it's a 'name recognition' thing; it works for TABLE, table and Table
too:
"Table" gets significantly more results than the other two, which are
broadly similar.
This might be a case for using a neutral phrase, such as nigritude
ultramarine, as Guy Macon may be geographically skewed.
"That's OK, Mrs Macon, you son has not been skewered, don't believe all you
read in the papers"

Guy is saying that "_" is treated like a number, whereas "-" gives results
like no other search. (All without the quotes of course)
