Ok I'm at my wits end with weeds every year. First i would like to know
something non toxic i can put on them (maybe something everyone has
around the house)? We usually pull the old weeds up put down the weed
control paper (black stuff) and they still poke through that! I have
seen others landscaping all summer long around my neighboorhood and they
never seem to have this problem!!! Im about to just hire someone to come
do it and then plant my flowers myself. I hate weeds!!!! Does anyone
have any suggestions? what do you do? we have used Preen weed control
in the past for the flower beds but it doesnt work for us. Thanks in
advance for all your suggestions. : )

Clarice who wants to see some more polls and posts instead of these
disgusting PORN ones!!!!

Clarice,

Check out http://www.dirtdoctor.com
and do a search for 'weeds', it'll bring up a
bunch of articles with tips, etc.

Howard Garrett has a radio show here every weekend and I always
learn something new!

Good luck! I'm feeling the gardening bug myself, in fact I'm
heading over to Home Depot to get some landscaping timbers to
build a new veggie and herb garden for Maya! (Dad and Maya are
taking a nap right now, so I can get something done for a change).

I also want to get to work on the landscaping out front, it's so DRAB!!
I hate that.

Love,
Carolyne in TX

Clarice, this isn't non-toxic, but it is OK if you keep the kiddies and dogs
away until it dries - I use RoundUp. I've got a large spray bottle of it
and just walk around the garden "shooting" any weeds that I see. We've also
used the black paper and the Preen. Neither worked.

When I spray, I do it as soon as Henry goes down for a nap. Then, it is dry
by the time he wakes. He doesn't really play in our gardens (they are very
high, raised beds as we have lots of hills). Anyway - I've never had a
problem with it.

Good luck! Weeds make me nuts too!

Clarice,
I use a combination of a few things to control weeds in my garden. Round Up
for the really stubborn ones, and mulch to keep the smaller ones at bay. We
have various size flowers, bushes and shrubs in our planting beds, and
covering all unplanted dirt is 2-3 inches of "gorilla hair" -- shredded
redwood bark. There are other styles, but I don't like the large bark
pieces myself. By having 2-3 inches, you basically stop a large number of
the weeks from germinating, since the seeds get no sunlight. And the ones
that do manage to germinate and grow, have very week root systems, since
they've had to grow an extra 2-3 inches before they even see the sun, so
they are very easy to pull.

I think in your case I'd use Round Up and a weed whacker to get rid of the
weeds before you start anything. Then I'd put down Preen or some other type
of pre-emergent, and possibly black paper (although I've never used black
paper myself), and then cover with 2-3 inches of some sort of mulch. The
nice thing about mulch is that it makes your planting beds look very
manicured and "finished." If you later want to plant something in an open
spot, you first rake the mulch out of the way, dig your hole, plant the
plant, fill the hole, and spread the mulch back around. The mulch slowly
decomposes (no stink), and needs to be freshened up once a year.

Also, I know it's tough to stay on top of the weed issue, but the sooner you
pull them the better. If you wait until they are large and have already
gone to seed, you are just signing up for Weed-a-polouza next year. Plus,
the larger they are, the stronger the root systems. If you can pull them
when they are very small and haven't flowered or gone to seed, it's much
easier.

Ok now i need all your help with something different to plant (flowers)
this year in my landscaping! Need suggestions for flowers. Im tired of
planting the same old thing every year. I always plant marigolds and
petunias and im getting tired of them! I want to plant some different
flowers. I need mostly full sun flowers (sun lovers) LOL and in back
of our house we have mostly shade so i need something besides impatients
that like shade or indirect light. Any suggestions?????

We have a problem with full sun here, too and I have found that Vinca do
very well. They are a hearty flower, somewhat like impatients, as in
they spread and get very "fluffy". I fill some of my flower beds with
them. I, too, always look for something "new". A lot of the time I am
unhappy with my new things, though, and just think I should have sticked
with ole' reliable!!

Are the Vincas in the impatient family? I think in the past i have
planted those. I could plant some of those. Thanks Megan!

One flower that I love for sun is Gerbera Daisies. Love them! So colorful.
They are annuals here in Wisconsin, but may be perennials where you are.

We have lots of shade, so I have more suggestions for that (though impatiens
really are the best if you want to liven up a dark space). Coleus, hostas,
foxgloves (for tall, spiky flowers), ferns (different sizes and shapes look
great together), astilbe (the flowers are like feathers and come in many
different colors). For spring, Lily of the Valley is heavenly. Myrtle is a
nice shady ground cover with pretty blue flowers in the spring.

Good luck!

The mulch should help them from regrowing, and like I said, make them much
easier to pull if a few do get through.

We have a service, but they use RoundUp, and I've used it myself in the
past, but not on a vegetable garden. For a vegetable garden I'm a huge
believer in thick layers of mulch. I use salt marsh hay if I can get it. I
don't think anything works besides roundup, I'm sorry to say. I've tried to
go non-toxic, but the stuff is just a waste of money ime.

how about perennials for full sun? They come back every year, and although
it's an initial investment, you get a REALLY great return on your dollar.
Things like BeeBalm, Delphinium, Statis, Peonies, Roses, Ornamental Lilies
all love full sun. For shade, it's a harder decision. It if's partial shade,
then you can have things like Columbine, but most flowers don't grow well
in shade. Full shade, you're looking at things like Jack in the Pulpit and
other woodland flowers, but pretty much nothing flowering grows in full
shade.

my favorite full-sun flower is the dahlia. in many places they are
perrenial as well. I fill in around the border with sweet william,
salvia and forget-me-nots. where you are will dictate, in part, what
you can plant.

as for shade - there are tons of wonderful perrenials you can do -
bleeding hearts, hosta, some lillies, jack-in-the-pulpit, lillies of
the valley, trillium. we have a few different species of fern as well
- not flowery but very pretty nonetheless.

good luck!

Hey, Clarice, here's a recipe for dandelion wine:

http://www.texascooking.com/recipes/dandelionwine.htm

If you can't get rid of them completely, at least you can get drunk on them.

Clarice,

Most of my yard is shade, so I can't help much with the sun-loving
plants. We also live in Zone 8, so most of what grows here has to be
able to handle extreme heat and humidity. For shade plants, I would
suggest: astilbe, caladiums, hostas, lenten rose, bleeding hearts,
toadlily, or columbine, to name a few. Ferns, cast irons, and
hydrangeas do really well in our yard, too. We do have full sun down
by the lake in our back yard, and we have some really cool things
growing there--bed of nails, Indian Squaw root and an assortment of
elephant ears, cannas and Japanese and Siberian irises.

Good luck! I'm jealous of anyone has a flower garden, but I don't
have the heart (or money) to remove enough trees to have a flower
garden. :-)

Hey Clarice! I just applied for another part-time job this week, at a real
estate company. If I get it, I will quit the job at the gas station. I am
quitting selling Avon next month, as I'm spending more on Avon stuff for
myself than I am making! But I am still delivering the newspapers in the
morning. It's the only exercise I get (if you don't count the Baby-Making
S*x - which still isn't working *sigh*).

Anyway, there is your update. Thanks for asking!

Warm hugs,
Starbug and her Zoo

No, we are dealing with the same thing.. is frustrating.. i know.

What kind of flowers have you decided to plant, Clarice? I would l ove to see
the suggestions. I need some flowers that grow in all weather conditions. We
have soo many trees and i just spent 110 dollars on plants/ flowers.. they are
dying.

oh.. is your house still up for sale? Are you looking for a new home.. if so,
how is it going?

much love to you.
