Good luck! I'm feeling the gardening bug myself, in fact I'm
heading over to Home Depot to get some landscaping timbers to
build a new veggie and herb garden for Maya! (Dad and Maya are
taking a nap right now, so I can get something done for a change).
I also want to get to work on the landscaping out front, it's so DRAB!!
I hate that.

When I spray, I do it as soon as Henry goes down for a nap. Then, it is dry
by the time he wakes. He doesn't really play in our gardens (they are very
high, raised beds as we have lots of hills). Anyway - I've never had a
problem with it.
Good luck! Weeds make me nuts too!

I think in your case I'd use Round Up and a weed whacker to get rid of the
weeds before you start anything. Then I'd put down Preen or some other type
of pre-emergent, and possibly black paper (although I've never used black
paper myself), and then cover with 2-3 inches of some sort of mulch. The
nice thing about mulch is that it makes your planting beds look very
manicured and "finished." If you later want to plant something in an open
spot, you first rake the mulch out of the way, dig your hole, plant the
plant, fill the hole, and spread the mulch back around. The mulch slowly
decomposes (no stink), and needs to be freshened up once a year.
Also, I know it's tough to stay on top of the weed issue, but the sooner you
pull them the better. If you wait until they are large and have already
gone to seed, you are just signing up for Weed-a-polouza next year. Plus,
the larger they are, the stronger the root systems. If you can pull them
when they are very small and haven't flowered or gone to seed, it's much
easier.

We have lots of shade, so I have more suggestions for that (though impatiens
really are the best if you want to liven up a dark space). Coleus, hostas,
foxgloves (for tall, spiky flowers), ferns (different sizes and shapes look
great together), astilbe (the flowers are like feathers and come in many
different colors). For spring, Lily of the Valley is heavenly. Myrtle is a
nice shady ground cover with pretty blue flowers in the spring.
Good luck!

We have a service, but they use RoundUp, and I've used it myself in the
past, but not on a vegetable garden. For a vegetable garden I'm a huge
believer in thick layers of mulch. I use salt marsh hay if I can get it. I
don't think anything works besides roundup, I'm sorry to say. I've tried to
go non-toxic, but the stuff is just a waste of money ime.

how about perennials for full sun? They come back every year, and although
it's an initial investment, you get a REALLY great return on your dollar.
Things like BeeBalm, Delphinium, Statis, Peonies, Roses, Ornamental Lilies
all love full sun. For shade, it's a harder decision. It if's partial shade,
then you can have things like Columbine, but most flowers don't grow well
in shade. Full shade, you're looking at things like Jack in the Pulpit and
other woodland flowers, but pretty much nothing flowering grows in full
shade.

my favorite full-sun flower is the dahlia. in many places they are
perrenial as well. I fill in around the border with sweet william,
salvia and forget-me-nots. where you are will dictate, in part, what
you can plant.
as for shade - there are tons of wonderful perrenials you can do -
bleeding hearts, hosta, some lillies, jack-in-the-pulpit, lillies of
the valley, trillium. we have a few different species of fern as well
- not flowery but very pretty nonetheless.
good luck!

Hey, Clarice, here's a recipe for dandelion wine:

If you can't get rid of them completely, at least you can get drunk on them.

Most of my yard is shade, so I can't help much with the sun-loving
plants. We also live in Zone 8, so most of what grows here has to be
able to handle extreme heat and humidity. For shade plants, I would
suggest: astilbe, caladiums, hostas, lenten rose, bleeding hearts,
toadlily, or columbine, to name a few. Ferns, cast irons, and
hydrangeas do really well in our yard, too. We do have full sun down
by the lake in our back yard, and we have some really cool things
growing there--bed of nails, Indian Squaw root and an assortment of
elephant ears, cannas and Japanese and Siberian irises.
Good luck! I'm jealous of anyone has a flower garden, but I don't
have the heart (or money) to remove enough trees to have a flower
garden. :-)

No, we are dealing with the same thing.. is frustrating.. i know.
What kind of flowers have you decided to plant, Clarice? I would l ove to see
the suggestions. I need some flowers that grow in all weather conditions. We
have soo many trees and i just spent 110 dollars on plants/ flowers.. they are
dying.
oh.. is your house still up for sale? Are you looking for a new home.. if so,
how is it going?
much love to you.
