For a change, Al Franken sounded serious and didn't want a fistfight. He
didn't seem to know much about Air America Radio's loan scandal speaking to
the New York Sun Monday, and said he had just learned the details last week.
In sum, he sounded a lot like the politicians he plays "gotcha" with. Maybe
Mr. Franken's ambitions for Norm Coleman's seat in the Senate are sobering
him up a bit.
He didn't know whether former Air America director and nonprofit
executive Evan Cohen had transferred inner-city childrens' money to Air
America, nor whether the money had been used for Air America's operations.
Mr. Franken did know this: Air America had known about the problem before
New York's Department of Investigation began studying it. But a city
spokesman says Air America "neglected to tell anyone at DOI or in the city

Watching Air America Radio thoroughly destroy its credibility is like last
night's burning Airbus jet in Toronto: it's hard to take your eyes away from
a full-fledged disaster.

The network's claim that all that's stopping it from repaying nearly
$900,000 (boy, does that number continue to grow) it owes the Bronx-based
Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club is an official direction from New York's
Department Of Investigation (DOI), is blown to bits by a fresh New York Post
report.
According to what's left of the Boys and Girls Club chapter, Air America is
late in repaying all of the money:
"Air America reached a legal agreement to have that loan repaid in full,"
beginning this summer, said Martta Rose, a spokeswoman for the Bronx-based
Boys & Girls Club, which is the subject of a probe by the city Department of
Investigation.

screwed the network in the early going and he seems to be
responsible for this. That right-wing blogs are trying to
blame this on AAR hosts, who also got stiffed by Cohen,
shows they're as dishonest as ever and getting desperate.

If the allegations of mismanagement and corruption at Gloria Wise
Boys and Girls Club are true, it is absolutely disgraceful.
As reported in the Wall Street Journal and the HBO Documentary, Left
of the Dia the company that the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club
officials gave money to, Progress Media, has been defunct since May
2004. That company was run at the time by Evan Cohen who has not
had any involvement in Air America Radio since May 2004.
The current owners of Air America Radio have no obligation to
Progress Media's business activities. We are very disturbed that
Air America Radio's good name could be associated with a reduction
in services for young people, which is why we agreed months ago to
fully compensate the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club as a result of
this transaction.
We at Air America Radio strongly believe in the mission of Boys and
Girls Clubs to provide a safe and nurturing place for young people
to learn and grow. As a result, we recently allowed the same club,
Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, to use our name in a fundraising
effort for a summer camp for children in their community.
The funding for Camp Air America was raised and collected entirely
by the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, and Air America promoted the
camp on air and urged support for it. A link on our web site sent
those interested in contributing to the camp to the Gloria Wise web
site. Regrettably, the camp did not survive the closure of the
Gloria Wise organization. We have offered any individuals who
contributed to the camp as a result of Air America's promotion the
option of a refund paid for by Air America Radio and the Club
offered the alternative option of having their donation redirected
to Kip's Bay Boys and Girls Club.l

A top staffer at the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club in The Bronx "conned" the
organization into lending nearly $500,000 to the left-wing radio network Air
America - a move that eventually doomed the youth group, a board member
charged yesterday.
The accused staffer, Evan Montvel-Cohen, wore two hats, as development
director at Gloria Wise and as founder of Air America, a start-up national
radio network based in Manhattan, where he was trying to raise $30 million.
"I say he's a con man," fumed Hillel Valentine, a longtime member of the
Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club's executive committee and a former assistant
chief in the New York Transit Police Department.
Cohen never raised the $30 million - and the company he formed to start up
Air America, home to Al Franken's radio show, never paid back the money to
Gloria Wise, which serves 20,000 kids.
Most of Gloria Wise's programs, based at Co-Op City, were shut last week as
the city's Department of Investigation probed the not-for-profit's finances.
"He not only conned us, he conned Air America," Valentine said, recalling
how Montvel-Cohen landed at the Bronx youth center in 2003 with a bang. In
just six days, he was organizing a major Manhattan fund-raiser at Pier 61.
Montvel-Cohen, who is from Guam, could not be reached. He was fired from his
$74,000-a-year post in The Bronx by the group's executive director, Charles
Rosen, who did not return calls for comment.

RADIO MAN CATCHES $TATIC

A top staffer at the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club in The Bronx "conned" the
organization into lending nearly $500,000 to the left-wing radio network Air
America - a move that eventually doomed the youth group, a board member
charged yesterday.
The accused staffer, Evan Montvel-Cohen, wore two hats, as development
director at Gloria Wise and as founder of Air America, a start-up national
radio network based in Manhattan, where he was trying to raise $30 million.
"I say he's a con man," fumed Hillel Valentine, a longtime member of the
Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club's executive committee and a former assistant
chief in the New York Transit Police Department.
Cohen never raised the $30 million - and the company he formed to start up
Air America, home to Al Franken's radio show, never paid back the money to
Gloria Wise, which serves 20,000 kids.
Most of Gloria Wise's programs, based at Co-Op City, were shut last week as
the city's Department of Investigation probed the not-for-profit's finances.
"He not only conned us, he conned Air America," Valentine said, recalling
how Montvel-Cohen landed at the Bronx youth center in 2003 with a bang. In
just six days, he was organizing a major Manhattan fund-raiser at Pier 61.
Montvel-Cohen, who is from Guam, could not be reached. He was fired from his
$74,000-a-year post in The Bronx by the group's executive director, Charles
Rosen, who did not return calls for comment.
