On his November 11 show, Rush Limbaugh made an off-hand remark smearing
Chelsea Clinton. Limbaugh claimed, "Chelsea Clinton said it was Bush's tax
cuts that led to 9/11. She did."
No, she didn't.
Chelsea Clinton wrote an article for Talk Magazine eight years ago
explaining what she was doing in lower Manhattan when 9-11 happened: "I was
expounding on the detriments of Bush's tax cut as we approached Grand
Central Terminal and were met with hordes of people running out of the
station." She wrote, "Once we stopped running, I started praying. I prayed
for my country and my city. I stopped berating the tax cut and started
praying that the president would rise to lead us."
So Chelsea Clinton never blamed 9-11 on the Bush tax cuts; she happened to
be criticizing the Bush tax cuts when 9-11 happened, and then promptly
stopped doing it to unify with the rest of the country behind Bush.
This wasn't the first time Limbaugh had smeared Chelsea Clinton.
In defending Sarah Palin, Limbaugh complained about a media double standard
in treating the daughters of politicians: "Chelsea Clinton was off-limits
all during the Clinton presidency and the Drive-Bys bent over forward,
grabbed the ankles, said, 'Okay Clinton, whatever you want.'"Limbaugh
contended that the media "left Chelsea Clinton alone." Of course, Limbaugh
was wrong; there was media attention to Chelsea's boyfriends, but since
Chelsea never got pregnant, it never became a major story.
But there was one member of the media who never left Chelsea alone. Fifteen
years ago, Limbaugh made one of the worst insults against a young girl in
the history of television.
On his TV show, Limbaugh put up a picture of the Clintons' cat, Socks, and
then asked: "Did you know there's a White House dog?" Then there appeared a
picture of 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton. Limbaugh implausibly claimed that it
was done by a technician without his permission. Limbaugh's excuse made no
sense. Why would Limbaugh be talking about the White House pets at all
unless there was some kind of punchline? What picture did he expect to
appear on the screen, if it wasn't Chelsea?
This wasn't the first time that Limbaugh would try to hide behind a
technician to excuse his hateful comments toward women. A USA Today reporter
at Limbaugh's radio studio in 1992 noted that while playing the song "Men"
for Limbaugh's Feminist Update, "Limbaugh's technicians, at his command,
punctuate the song with a sounds of cows mooing. Every time the cows moo,
Limbaugh orders Men stopped. 'Don't do that!' Stop. The music starts again.
More moos. Stop! Music. ('Throw another one in there!' he says off mike,
chuckling)."(Peter Johnson, "Rush Limbaugh's Right of way," USA Today,
October 28, 1992.) So Limbaugh had a documented record of ordering his staff
to compare women to animals and then pretending that the technicians were
violating his commands.
Nor was this the first daughter of a president that Limbaugh had insulted,
since he had also called Amy Carter ugly. Limbaugh is indifferent to his own
hypocrisy; he is happy to denounce a comedian for joking about the daughter
of a conservative politician while ignoring his far more hateful comments
about the daughter of a liberal politician.
Limbaugh owes an apology to Chelsea Clinton for what he said yesterday, and
for what he did many years ago and has refused to take responsibility for
doing. Without that, millions of Dittoheads will imagine that an outright
lie told by Limbaugh is the absolute truth.

Limbaugh's Audience Size? It's Largely Up in the Air ... [E]stimates of
Limbaugh's nationwide (and overseas) audience are exercises in guesswork,
slippery methodology and suspect data. Limbaugh himself has muddied the
water with the claim that he reaches 20 million people a week, although
there's no independent support for that figure.
...
Arbitron has never attempted to aggregate all of this audience data for this
many stations and times. "There is no economic motivation for any objective
third party to do that kind of analysis," says Thom Mocarsky, an Arbitron
spokesman.
Jeez, all this time I thought it was Chelsea's ugly Hill-Bill-combo-
butt-face-mix that was the target.
Yeah I did too -- poor thing, she got Bubba's nose and Rodham's
canckles....
I wonder whose sexual orientation she got?
Has she ever been seen romantically with a guy?

Yes. Unfortunately, so have you.
