A bit? CABIN FEVER was only fun because you wanted to see the annoying characters get their comeuppance - Same with HOSTEL.

Fucking great today. I spent my lunch hour bodysurfing not a million miles from

clear and inviting in the middle of a city of 5-odd million people.

Umm....no.

He's not Kubrick but who the fuck is, except Kubrick? And he's fucking
dead.

I think whether you love him or hate him or somewhere in between (like
me), you sort of have to acknowledge that he has his own distinctive
voice--just by the virtue of hating him I think this is undeniable.
Whether that's something you like or despise, of course, is another
matter. But how many directors who've come along in the last 20-odd
years have managed to imprint their signature so well? I can't think of
too many off hand, Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, and a few others.

I simply think that that in itself is something of an achievement.
And let's face it, not much coming out of Japan or Hong Kong these days.

My position on HOSTEL has moderated over time, I think. I used to loathe it
with every fibre of my being because it failed to take advantage of its
opportunities. Now, I just regard it as an interesting failure for exactly the
same reason. The chances to thoughtfully consider American cultural imperialism
was squandered in favour of some fairly blunt and unsubtle commentary whose
primary purpose was actually fairly exploitative rather than actually satirical
or observational. The characters were ciphers at best and loathesome at worst
and the concluding revenge fantasy was just plain dumb.

On the other hand, it was well made and its picture of a bleak, Eastern European
setting was quite striking.

I honestly think that HOSTEL PART 2 was an infinitely better film and achieved
its aims much more effectively. Characterisation was still paper thin but the
archetypes were deployed carefully and drew out the relevant tensions (which is
something that I frequently observe when something is deftly plotted but perhaps
slightly underwritten. I found the death of Lorna quite affecting not only
because I empathised with her awkward, shy nerdiness but also because it was so
well realised in terms of performance.

Hey, you're in Australia, right? Do you ever wonder how many folks who die

See? It made me feel a little sick. And I appreciated it, although I still
like the first better. And if a horror movie elicits more than derision and
laughter from me or more commonly, an urge to just gab throughout the whole
thing, then it has been successful.

I just had an epiphany here - If I don't feel compelled to talk during the
whole thing, then it's successful. I guess.

When I was backpacking I made the required pilgrimage to Bondi and was
very underwhelmed - couldn't see what the fuss was about when I'd been
to a dozen nicer beaches up and down the coast. Obviously now I
appreciate why it's so special - as you say, the location. Imagine if
they dropped a beautiful in the middle of Southwark. London would
suddenly be a nice place to live.

It's not easy - she's from country NSW and the accent gets stronger
after every visit home - but on the other hand I've been videoing the
youngling a bit recently and every video seems to have Hugh Grant
talking on the soundtrack. I never realised I sounded like such a
pommy twat.

Yeah, I'll give you that, and I don't hate him either. His films are

"Nice place to live" is relative. I'd actually like to remain in Hobart, which
is a fantastic city and genuinely a nice place to live. Sydney drives me nuts
but it's where I decided to find work that actually paid money. Melbourne looks
more and more inviting as time marches on.

You know how it is when it's too late to start a new movie or too drunk to
trust you'll pay attention to one and there's something on cable that you've
already seen so you don't really have to worry about paying attention? And
you have a spouse who will always pick out something he's comfortable with?

Sydney has culture in spades. As for the weather, I find summer almost
unbearable with the beach being the only way to survive it. Water's getting

....And you always get on to me about calling TV "shit". LOL

I watch it mostly for news, politics or movie-channels (without commercials or cuts). The (past and present) TV series I like, I either find them online, ask Nigel or wait for the series/box-set. I unwind with brain-dead "Adult Swim" at night or an occasional 1000 WAYS TO DIE.... Otherwise, the medium might as well be dead to me because the commercials and "reality-TV" give me a headache from the blatant stupidity.

There are some great things on TV. But as with any medium, it's always
going to be 90% shit. Right now I'm watching "Mad Men" and "The Killing"
(I'm actually 5 episodes behind on the latter, so who knows if I'll ever
finish it). Other recent series I consider pretty fucking good include
"Breaking Bad," "Fringe," "American Horror Story" and "The River." And
there have been lots of other great series, as well, not to mention all
the great stuff from the UK, Japan and elsewhere in the world. But sure,
there's crap like "American Idol" (sorry, well, I won't mention your

My love of a sport is directly proportional to the chance of blood
ending up on the playing surface. I would have fit in really well in

Watch women's team volleyball then. Seriously, these women put
themselves through hell to get a shot or save a point. They're rougher

wearing skimpy suits, which adds a whole new element to it.
