London bicycle cop, Baz, is knocked off his bike by a local thug and
suffers a head injury. The injury changes him and he starts a zero
tolerance campaign against criminals in his area. He takes his vigilante
plan to a new level by using his police helmet-cam to record the death
sentences he passes and then anonymously uploads them to the internet. He
also has his own twitter account so people can follow his work. He has a
strict code and will only kill criminals who have told him that they
don't deserve to live (although, they aren't necessarily aware that
they've actually said that). His life is made more difficult by his
abusive, alcoholic mother with whom he lives and isn't helped by Val, his
Police partner, who is getting too close.

The British black comedy is quite good, although the humour is very
uneven. It is presented in an interesting way with twitter feeds and text
chats appearing on the screen at relevant times, but they are never
intrusive. The technology aspect explains the films off-putting title.

Overall, definitely worth a look.

Get over being so fucking old and realize that language is fluid. Faster now
than in the past, but we all put "ing" to make a gerund instead of putting a
"y" in front of the verb. Thanks to some college courses, I used to dream in
Elizabethan. We do NOT want to go back to that.

Try reading Chaucer in Middle English and then bitch about how language
changes.

Do you understand what people are trying to say? Then they've done their job
communicating.

My wife is a college journalism instructor and language geek, and while
I used to be a bit of a language Luddite, she has largely cured me of
this. As Lesmond points out, language is a living thing, always
evolving. Splitting infinitives, for instance, used to be verbotten, but
these days, it is no longer so. I still avoid it, but technically, it is
no longer wrong. When my wife worked at CNN, she had to write news
stories in conversational English. If you follow the formal, old-school
rules, you wind up with sentences that are overly long and hard to
follow. Sometimes, it's easier to end a sentence with a preposition that
to jump through the hoops needed to avoid that.

There's something to be said for that, as well. For that reason, my own
writing, even in informal places like here and Facefuck, tends to be
mostly grammatically correct (except when I'm trying for irony of
colloquialisms). I know the rules and break them only when I am going
for a particular effect.

And then there's Bod. (That reminds me of a theme song. Ten points to
the person who names it.)

I did read Chaucer in the original Middle English in college. It was
painful. The only English Lit class that I didn't enjoy.

Personally I love playing with language, and love writers like Joss
Whedon who invent new phrases, words, and syntax, as he used to do
with BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (the series).

Doesn't mean that it's elegant or nice to read.

Been there done that. You didn't find it fun?

I'm happy that people are communicating but even something as simple as
titling a film should show more thought than is on display in this
particular instance, hence my dislike of the title.

Just 'cos all the kids are saying "cray cray" instead of "crazy" and
"random" for I-don't-know-what-it-means-but-it-doesn't-mean-random
doesn't make it elegant or pleasant for me to experience. In short, I
feel that I should be allowed my own likes and dislikes regardless of
what the word of the now happens to be.

Why not say, "I do not agree with this strategy"?

Perfectly grammatically correct and far less stilted and affected than what

Yeah, but who doesn't like people playing with the language if it's
done with wit and intelligence? It's not like Chaucer wasn't doing

You must have misread the article, as it clearly says that the author
(and, by extension, most of us) were taught never to split infinitives.
The point is that there was never a good REASON for it. With that, I agree.

Some of us do have fun on Facebook. We all have friends who post stupid
pictures of their kids, but there is also AH type shenanigans - I've
recently been blocked by two anti-page 3 campaigners whom I shamelessly
trolled (along with Simon) and then got blocked by (in)famous creationist

Au contraire, we are arguing about whether or not it was ever "wrong",
not about what was taught.

You are free to argue whatever you'd like. *I* was arguing what we were

You said "technically it is no longer wrong". I said it never was.
Don't see what the state of your rubbish school system has to do with
it.

I haven't seen it here, but I wonder who the funk is teaching people
that the plural of words such as scientist, guitarist and hobbyist does
not require an "s" at the end. I see this mistake almost every day and
have attributed it to linguistically challenged people writing
phonetically. Or something. I have mentioned this phenomenon to
several friends who claim they haven't noticed it. Have you?

A pyrotechnics forum I frequent is predominantly old farts and it's
shocking how poorly many of them communicate ("I seen him done it" and
such), especially considering how fundamentally intelligent most of them
are. American public education has always been inconsistent and is
steadily getting worse. Most of my teachers utterly sucked until I got
into professional school.

As in, "technically, it was once wrong," as in, if you split an
infinitive in a school writing project, you would get points taken off.
I stand my ground. And our rubbish school system has everything to do

I have never seen the plural versions of the words "scientist, guitarist
and hobbyist" spelled without a concluding "s." That's not to say that
there are not those who do it. I've seen the language horribly mangled
by people who you'd expect would know better. There are only a few words
in the English language that can be plural without an "s" on the end,
like "deer" and "fish."
