I decided to find out what it is, and did a quick altavista search for
it.

Basically, magic realism is the depiction of everyday things in an
unrealistic manner, describing commonplace objects and events in such a
way as to make them seem surreal, magical, or fantastic.

I'll give it a go... hmmm...

With a rush of air, the smouldering embers flared, erupted in
brilliance, and their slow crawl became a brief gallop, a short burst of
speed along the white shaft which they traversed. The man's fleshy face
cracked open, the fume-reeking stick moved away, and a sudden geyser of
foetid smoke blasted from the depths of his body. Following shortly on
its tail came a tremendous pounding of spongy flesh and ripping cords,
and he choked out a few more minutes of his shortening life, which were
chased away by the teasing wind of entropy.

Bugger it, that'll do. An alternative to "He took a drag of his
cigarette, exhaled, and coughed several times."

I have cancelled this message, but if anyone still gets it, sorry about the
mix-up. I meant to email it to a friend, but I got confused and posted it
instead!

Just a friendly note: I believe you meant to refer to magical realism, not
magic realism, e.g., _One_Hundred_Years_of_Solitude_ et al.

Semi on-topic...does anybody here like Magritte? I particularly like "Menaced Assassin"
and "Pleasure".

Interesting. Sounds kinda like a pastiche.
