I've been looking to download an e-book version of my favorite
anthology of ghost stories of all time, the Random House Modern
Library 1944 collection by Robert Wise, "Great Tales of Terror & the
Supernatural." Look as I may, I could never find an on-line version.
I know I can simply buy the book, but where is the challenge in that?

Yesterday, it suddenly hit me -- why don't I download all the
individual stories in the collection, and put them together in the
same order? I've been occupying my time doing that today, and it's
fun. This is something that would never have been possible a few
years ago. The progress of the Internet makes these short stories
available.

So far I haven't hit any in the table of contents I can't find, but
that may happen. That's part of the fun also. If I can find the
introductory material I'll stick that in at the front, but I don't
really need it. The stories are the important thing.

I read the book when I was about 13 or 14 years old. The family in a
basement apartment across the street had the book. I think it was
missing its cover, it had been read so often. My sister used to
babysit for them, and I'd go over and read while she was there to
keep her company. It was the first time I'd read the stories. Made a
huge impression on me. It may be the single most important book I've
ever read, as far as my future life direction is concerned.

I was collecting more stories on the list tonight. So far I've got
around three-quarters of them downloaded and formatted in text
format. There's a few that appear to be still under copyright --
they don't seem to be readily available on the Internet, anyway. I
should be able to scan them out of other anthology collections in my
library and OCR them. Brings back a lot of good memories for me.
