The are several reasons for using hollow-points:
* They do more damage than FMJ (full metal jacket) rounds. As an economy
measure, you bring down the perp with fewer rounds.
* They tend to expend their energy in the first thing they hit, rather than
over-penetrating and going on to threaten bystanders.
* They tend to fragment, thereby enhancing the above two reasons.
* They're cheaper than FMJ because NOBODY uses FMJ rounds. Orders for FMJ
bullets have to be hand-crafted, one at a time. Or so I'm told.
