Here's the situation. The toilet flushes properly, but the water won't go
down. Upon visual inspection there is no apparent waste clogging it from
above. So of course I get out the auger and am able to push it all the way
through. After trying that and a plunger several times I decide to pull up
the toilet to see if I can find any type of obstruction. I'm expecting to
find a small toy lodged in there, but still no visible sign of anything.
With the toilet removed and brought outside I simulate its' normal
operation. I can get the auger to go completely through from the bowl to the
bottom and vice-versa, but it still won't flush properly. I did manage to
get it to work once, but I'm not about to chance putting it back in place
until I can determine exactly what is causing the problem. It seems to me
that there must be something stuck inside there that is hindering the water
flow, but without being able to see it there's not much that I can do other
than go out and buy a new toilet. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks in
advance to those who respond.
Peter.
Quickly pour a bucket full of water (about 2 gallons) into the toilet.
If it flushes OK when you do this the drain is OK. If not then the
drain is probably clogged. Very often the clog is something like a comb
or child's toy stuck in the gooseneck of the toilet bowl itself. This
can usually be seen if you pull the toilet and check from the bottom,
but not always. There can also be a clog in the drain pipe, of course.
If the drain is OK then the likely problem is limed-up jets around the
rim of the bowl and sometimes at the bottom front.

Now, my problem is identical on two toilets! These toilets are in
bathrooms that are adjacent to each other. I removed one toilet when I
was re-tiling the floor. There are absolutely no clogs. I have also
visually inspected the water outlets under the rim, both toilets look
fine.
I suspect the vent in my case. I did run a hose down the vent and the
water seemed to drain fine. I'm wondering of a partally clogged vent
could cause a poor flushing toilet (As a fully clogged toilet can)?
I'm also wondering if my outlets under the rim are partally clogged
inside where I cant see?!?! (I don't think its this because my bowl
fills up but the water doesn't go down as fast.
Any suggestions for me?
Thanx

It would be extremely unusual for a vent problem to cause poor flushing.
Try dumping a bucket of water rapidly into the bowl. If it flushes
normally (glug glug) then the outlets around the rim (and possibly at
the bottom front) are clogged.
